LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Richie Hyden (Melbourne, Australia/Greenwich (Conn.)) and Gabriel Heiber (Caracas, Venzuela/Miami Beach (Fla.)) had their potential game-tying shots in the final 30 seconds saved as the Bucknell men's water polo team came up short in its attempt to upset No. 11 Pacific Sunday morning at the SoCal Tournament. The Bison fell by a 9-8 score to the Tigers.
Bucknell used a strong second half to come back from a 5-2 halftime deficit, but fell for the fifth consecutive game to fall to 8-10 this season. Four of those losses have been to top-15 teams as Bucknell has now faced 10 ranked opponents this season.
Hyden and Johnny Stupp (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute) led the Bison with three goals apiece, while Hyden added a pair of assists, giving him 73 points this season. That figure is two more than his freshman-year total of 71.
Randy Ang (Hillsborough, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) also contributed heavily to the Bison attack, registering one goal and three assists.
The Bison did attempt 35 shots in the game, thanks in large part to 13 ejections drawn. Alex Lampley (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) led the way with four ejections drawn.
Miles Gilhuly (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) started in goal and made one save in the first half. Nick Donahue (Brooklyn, N.Y./Lawrenceville) relieved him in the second half and stopped five shots.
With the loss to Pacific, a team Bucknell defeated 10-5 last September, the Bison will wrap up play at the SoCal Tournament Sunday afternoon against Pomona-Pitzer. Game time is slated for 4:20 p.m. (Eastern). Bucknell and Pomona-Pitzer are the only two unranked teams in the 16-team field.
