ANNAPOLIS, Md. – A Navy goal with 1.6 second remaining in regulation prevented the Bucknell men's water polo team from upsetting a ranked opponent for the second time in 16 hours as the Bison dropped a heartbreaking 7-6 decision to the No. 14 Mids Saturday afternoon. Bucknell has now lost to Navy 14 straight times, but five of the last six outings have been decided by three goals or less.
Bucknell (8-6), which defeated No. 18 Johns Hopkins on Friday night and was looking to improve to 2-0 in CWPA Southern Division play, led 4-3 entering the final quarter of play, but Navy outscored the Bison 4-2 in the final quarter.
Navy (10-6) sealed the victory as it earned an ejection in the final 30 seconds. Bucknell goalie Miles Gilhuly (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) made a couple stops of potential game-winning shots, but a Mids player scooped up the rebound and found the back of the net just before the final buzzer.
Richie Hyden (Melbourne, Australia/Greenwich (Conn.)) paced the Bison offense with four goals and one assist. He now has 41 goals this season, eclipsing his freshman-year total of 40. He is just eight points shy of his rookie total of 71.
Johnny Stupp (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute), who along with Randy Ang (Hillsborough, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) rounded out the Bucknell scoring attack, led the team with three steals. Senior co-captain Alex Lampley (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) drew a season-high six ejections off the bench. It was the highest figure for a Bison player this season.
Gilhuly, who played the second half after relieving starter Nick Donahue (Brooklyn, N.Y./Lawrenceville) at the beginning of the third quarter, stopped six shots. Donahue posted three saves and a steal in his 16 minutes of playing time.
The Bison will wrap up their opening weekend of league play Saturday at 7 p.m. with a game at George Washington. Bucknell and the Colonials have split their first two meetings this season. George Washington and MIT are the only two unranked foes for the Bison in their last eight games.
