BALTIMORE, Md. – Richie Hyden (Melbourne, Australia/Greenwich (Conn.)) equaled his career high with five goals and Howie Kalter (Durham, N.H./Phillips Academy Andover) totaled a career-high six points, including four assists as the Bucknell men's water polo team defeated No. 18 Johns Hopkins 13-9 Friday evening. The win was the second in seven days over a ranked team for the Bison, who defeated the Blue Jays for the seventh consecutive meeting.
Bucknell (8-5, 1-0 CWPA), which has now won four of its last five games, is now 1-0 in CWPA Southern Division play with games at No. 14 Navy and George Washington on Saturday.
The Bison shut out Johns Hopkins (6-6, 0-1 CWPA) in the first quarter to take a 3-0 lead and never let the Blue Jays get back in the game.
As has been the case much of the season, Hyden led the offense, tallying his fourth five-goal outing of the year. He now has 37 goals and 58 points in just 12 games. Kalter tied Hyden for team-high honors with six points. He equaled his career high with two goals and now has 10 points over the last two outings. The sophomore has registered at least one point in every game since being shut out in the season opener against No. 1 Cal.
While Hyden and Kalter powered the offense, they had plenty of help. Johnny Stupp (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute) equaled his career high of five points with two goals and an assist. Andrew Nelson (Palos Verdes, Calif./Plaos Verdes) added one goal and a career-high three assists for a career-high four points, while Sean Coghlan (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) contributed two goals and an assist as Bucknell posted 13 assists on its 13 goals. Senior co-captain Gabriel Heiber (Caracas, Venezuela/Aventura (Fla.)) rounded out the scoring with one goal.
In addition to his five points, Stupp was strong on defense with a season-high four steals, the most by a Bison this season. He now has a team-high 21.
Goalies Nick Donahue (Brooklyn, N.Y./Lawrenceville) and Miles Gilhuly (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) split time in net. Donahue started and played on the shallow end of the shallow-deep pool, while Gilhuly played the opposite quarters. Donahue recorded seven saves, while Gilhuly registered four.
With the win, Bucknell improved to 2-4 opposite ranked foes this year. Last year, when they had 20 wins, the Bison totaled seven victories over ranked opponents.
Bucknell will wrap up its opening league weekend on Saturday with two more road contests. The Bison will play No. 14 Navy at 12 p.m. They will then wrap up the day with a 7 p.m. contest at George Washington. Additionally, immediately following the meeting with Navy, the Bison and Mids “B” teams will face each other in an exhibition outing.
