LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell junior Conor O'Brien (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./St. Anthony's) scored a goal for the third straight game, this one a game-tying shot with only 9:49 left in regulation, but Owen Gombami's second goal of the day 8:54 into overtime lifted Saint Francis (Pa.) to a 2-1 win over the Bison in a non-league game Wednesday afternoon.
The Bison have now dropped three straight contests, all on the road, on the heels of a five-game unbeaten streak. Bucknell is now 3-4-2 on the season, while the Red Flash improved to 2-5-1.
Gombami's first goal came exactly 20 minutes into the match. The Red Flash defended a Bucknell corner kick and went end to end, with Gombami finishing off assists from Taylor Powers and Andrew Pedigo.
It remained a 1-0 game until the 81st minute, when Bucknell's Chris Hennings (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) was taken down just outside the box. The Bison capitalized when O'Brien scored on the free kick.
Bucknell took the first four shots in sudden-death, including a great look from six yards out by Anthony Ferraro (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional), but Red Flash keeper Brad Williams made the stop.
Not long after, Saint Francis scored on its only shot in overtime. It was Gombami again coming through the middle of the Bison defense to score from 15 yards out.
Saint Francis outshot the Bison 17-13, but Bucknell had a 9-3 edge in corner kicks.
Junior Will Byrne (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna) made his second straight start in goal for Bucknell and made three saves. Williams stopped four shots for the Red Flash.
Bucknell returns to action on Saturday night, hosting Navy at 7 p.m. in the Patriot League opener. Just prior to the match there will be a special stadium dedication ceremony, and at 6 p.m. a tailgate reception will take place just outside the stadium. All of the events are free and open to the public.
