Bucknell Women's Tennis Completes Day Two of Bucknell Invitational

Day two of the Bucknell Invitational featured strong singles play for Bucknell, as the Bison won five of their seven Flight "A" singles matches, and four of their six Flight "B" singles matches. Bucknell finished 4-3 in Flight "C" singles and 2-2 across two flights in doubles competition. The Bison have a chance to have the champion in three of tomorrow's five flights of competition.
Bucknell had all four players of its players competing in Flight "A" Singles advance on the first day, and day two featured more strong play from the top Bison singles' players. Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School) won both of her matches on Saturday, advancing to the Flight "A" Singles championship match to be held on Sunday against teammate Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) who was victorious in her match. Gamboa first defeated Daniella Phillis of Villanova, 6-0, 6-1, before coming from behind to beach Rachel Janasek of Loyola, 1-6, 6-3, (10-4). Lucido won 7-5, 6-1, against Courtney Reed of Villanova.
Bucknell senior Ashley Globerman (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown High School) had lost to Reed, 6-2, 6-3, but then defeated Emily Bolchoz of Mount St. Mary's, 7-6, 6-7, (10-8), advancing to tomorrow's fifth place match against teammate Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham). Dwojewski lost to Janasek, 4-6, 6-2, (12-10), but then advanced after Phillis withdrew.
Dumi Iepuras (North Wales, Pa./Germantown Friends School) defeated Judy Lite of Loyala, 6-2, 6-4, and Jessica DeCarlos for the Knights, 6-3, 6-3, advancing to Sunday's Flight "B" Singles championship match. Bucknell freshman Liz Larkin (Blue Bell, Pa./ Germantown Academy) lost her Flight "B" Singles match against Emma Haley of the Mountaineers, 7-6, 6-1, before defeating Jinny DeCarlos of Fairleigh Dickinson, who withdrew. She will play in the fifth place match on Sunday. Classmate Courtney Casey (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Visitation) bested Emily Grugan of the Mountaineers, 6-1, 6-2, before losing to Kristen Gobberg of Villanova, 6-1, 6-3.
Tiffany Card (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional) lost in the Flight "C" Singles bracket to Michell Jordan of Villanova, 6-2, 6-2, and Camille Simonetti (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) lost to Jackie Lionetta of Loyola, 4-6, 6-2, (10-4). The two teammates then squared off for the right to advance to the fifth place match, and Card was victorious, 7-6, 6-3. Bison junior Kirstyn Sotak (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Hathaway Brown) beat Taylor Hamlet of the Mountaineers, 6-0, 6-1, and Natasha Stone of Villanova, 6-0, 6-3. She will play in the Flight "C" Singles consolation bracket final. Bucknell's Megan Lee (Middleburg, Va./Wakefield) lost 6-4, 6-0, to Stone, but defeated Hamlet, 6-0, 6-2, to advance to the 13th place match tomorrow.
In Flight "A" Doubles, Gamboa and Lucido of the Bison soundly defeated Loyola's Janasek and Johnson, 8-2, while Bucknell's pairing of Globerman and Dwojewski lost 8-5, to Urda and Gobberg of the Mountainners. In Flight "B" Doubles matches, Bucknell's Larkin and Simonetti lost to Bergeron and Black of Loyola, 8-3, but Card and Sotak bested Hamlet and Dupaya of Mount St. Mary's, 8-2.
The invitational concludes Sunday, Sept. 21, at the Bucknell Tennis Courts.
