CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - In a game that served as preparation for this weekend's challenging ECAC Championship, the Bucknell men's water polo team snapped a two-game losing streak with a 12-6 win at MIT Friday evening. Sean Coghlan (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice), Beau Caillouette (Newport Beach, Calif./Sage Hill School) and Gabriel Heiber (Caracas, Venezuela/Miami Beach (Fla.)) each tallied two goals for the Bison, while Richie Hyden (Melbourne, Australia/Greenwich (Conn.)) led the way with three scores and an assist.
Bucknell (5-4) was tied with MIT (3-7) 2-2 after the first quarter, but outscored the Engineers 9-2 in the middle two frames.
Hyden, who leads the team with 44 points this season, totaled a team-high four points in the contest. Caillouette and Heiber each added an assist to his two goals and Johnny Stupp (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute) dished out a team-high three assists to give Bucknell four players with at least three points in the contest. Stupp now ranks second on the squad with 14 assists, five more than he had in his first two years as a Bison.
Playing unselfishly, Bucknell assisted on each of its 12 goals as nine different players registered at least one helper.
Freshmen accounted for four of the squad's 12 goals as they saw extensive playing time, especially in the latter part of the game. Caillouette had his two goals to lead all freshmen, while Spencer Richley (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) and Paul Reamey (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) contributed one apiece.
In goal, first-year head coach John Abdou continued to split time between Miles Gilhuly (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte), who earned his second start of the year and made five saves while playing the first half, and Nick Donahue (Brooklyn, N.Y./Lawrenceville), who equaled Gilhuly's five stops while playing the second stanza.
The victory helped Bucknell improve to 14-1 all-time against MIT.
The Bison will stay in Cambridge, Mass., the rest of the weekend, but will play at Harvard's Blodgett Pool in the ECAC Championship. Bucknell will open the two-day tournament Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. against Brown.
