CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Richie Hyden (Melbourne, Australia/Greenwich (Conn.)) led Bucknell with six points, including a team-high four goals, as the Bison defeated a ranked foe for the first time this season with an 11-9 win over No. 18 Brown Saturday morning at the ECAC Championship. Bucknell was the fourth seed in the eight-team field, while the Bears were the fifth seed.
The Bison, who improved to 6-4 with the victory, will now play top-seeded and No. 12 St. Francis (N.Y.) at 7 p.m. in the semifinals of the championship.
After playing to a 5-5 tie in the first half, Bucknell outscored Brown 4-2 in the pivotal third quarter.
After substituting liberally through the early part of the 2008 campaign, first-year Bison head coach John Abdou stuck with his veterans against Brown. Starters accounted for nine of the 11 goals and all 10 assists.
Sean Coghlan (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) nearly matched Hyden with three goals and two assists, while Andrew Nelson (Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes) contributed a pair of scores. Gabriel Heiber (Caracas, Venezuela/Miami Beach (Fla.)) added one goal and a pair of assists.
Bucknell was strong on the defensive end as well with Hyden and Johnny Stupp (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute) tying for the team lead with three steals apiece. That figure matched the most by a Bison this season. Additionally, goalie Miles Gilhuly (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) played the whole game and stopped a season-high eight shots.
The Bison victory was their first over a ranked foe this year as they improved to 1-3 against teams in the top 20. Their last win over a ranked opponent was against Brown at last year's Eastern Championship.
Bucknell will be back in action in the semifinals of the ECAC Championship against No. 12 St. Francis (N.Y.), which upended Princeton 11-5 Saturday morning.
