RICHMOND, Va. - Christa Matlack (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport Area) and Brooke Stokes (Gladwyne, Pa./The Shipley School) scored second-half goals to help the Bucknell women's soccer team erase a 2-0 deficit, but host Virginia Commonwealth answered the equalizer only 39 seconds later to steal a 3-2 victory on Sunday afternoon.
The Bison fell to 3-3-1 on the season, but will now play six of their next eight games at home after being on the road for six of their first seven. VCU, which benefited from two goals and an assist from Stephanie Power, improved to 2-4.
Power scored in the 18th and 58th minutes for the Rams before the Bison caught fire. Bucknell managed only one shot in the first half but launched 12 in the second. In the 69th minute, Matlack outran goalkeeper Lauren Hardison to a loose ball and scored into a vacated net to make it a 2-1 game.
Then with less than seven minutes remaining the Bison scored on a set piece, with Stokes just getting a foot on a pass from Caitlin Holtz (Freehold, N.J./The Peddie School) and tipping it in. Holtz picked up her team-leading fifth assist of the season, while Stokes registered her first goal of the year.
But just moments later, Amanda Adams sent a cross to Power, and her shot was deflected in by Laurel Pastor, lifting the Rams to the 3-2 win.
VCU edged Bucknell on the shot chart 14-13, while the Bison took four corner kicks to three for the Rams.
Bison goalkeeper Kathryn Sutton (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area) made seven saves, while Hardison was credited with five.
Bucknell has two home contests next weekend, first against Temple on Friday at 7 p.m., then opposite Loyola (Md.) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
