PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Senior Nicole Marotta (Bridgewater, N.J./Mount St. Mary Academy) scored early for the Bucknell women's soccer team, but Rutgers (3-0) proved to be too much, earning a 4-1 decision over the Bison on Sunday evening at Yurcak Field. The loss was Bucknell's first of the season, putting its record at 2-1-1.
Bucknell struck first when Marotta scored in the 17th minute off the Bison's only corner kick of the game. The goal, which was Marotta's second of the short season, was assisted by freshman Casey Crowley (Hamilton Square, N.J./The Peddie School). The assist was Crowley's first of her collegiate career.
Bucknell was unable to maintain its early momentum, however, getting out-shot by Rutgers, 19-9. The Bison allowed four consecutive goals, three of them coming in the first half. Rutgers' Caycie Gusman scored twice, while Gina Demaio assisted on all three of the team's first-half goals.
The difficult outing came on the heels of a surprise 3-2 victory over Maryland on Friday night, making the letdown particularly trying for the Orange and Blue.
"We're frustrated, especially after the win the other night," said head coach Ben Landis.
Goalkeeper Kathryn Sutton (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area) also had five saves in 90 minutes of play on the night.
The Bison next play on Sunday, Sept. 7 at Penn State. The game will take place at 6 p.m. in University Park, Pa., following a matchup between the schools' men's teams at 3:30 p.m.
