LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell field hockey team opened its season with at 2-0 loss to Villanova at Graham Field on Saturday. Villanova sophomore Lauren Wuzzardo spoiled new Bison head coach Jeremy Cook's debut with a goal and an assist in the Wildcat (1-0) victory.
"I am extremely proud of the group," Cook said. "Villanova is perennially a top-20 team, and it had to play very, very well to beat us."
The Bison (0-1) fell behind early, as Wuzzardo scored an unassisted goal 67 seconds into the contest. Exactly 16 minutes later, Wuzzardo found teammate Dana Ramsden among a group of players in front of the net, and Ramsden scored for a 2-0 lead.
Bucknell tried to counter and had a flurry of chances to score, registering 10 penalty corners on the day, compared to just two for the Wildcats. The Bison attempted seven shots, five of which were on goal and turned aside by Wildcat goalkeeper Maura McCormick.
"I would not expect to lose a game 2-0 when we outcornered them 10-2," Cook said.
Junior goalkeeper Jessie Atieh (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) made six saves for the Orange and Blue, including three against the skilled Wuzzardo. Junior Megan Krebs (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./GAR Memorial) recorded a defensive save for the Bison, and attempted two shots, both on goal. Bison senior co-captain Amanda Faust (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) led the squad with four shots, two on goal.
"We did what we needed to do to put ourselves in a position to win," Cook said. "We had enough scoring opportunities, but were just a bit unlucky."
The Bison return to action tomorrow, hosting Longwood at 11:30 a.m. at Graham Field. The Lancers (0-1) lost to Lock Haven 5-1 today at Graham Field, in a game played prior to the Bucknell-Villanova contest.
