HENLEY, England (Thames River) - The Bucknell women's rowing team completed a two-week trip to England with the Henley Women's Regatta on the Thames River this past weekend. The Bison varsity eight, second varsity eight and single Anna Johnson were in action at the prestigious regatta.
All of the events at the Henley Women's Regatta are head-to-head competitions. The Bucknell varsity eight competed in the Elite Eight Event, while the Second Varsity Eight was in the Senior Eight Event. Johnson, a freshman, was entered in the Elite Single Event.
The varsity eight lost to Leander Composite, which is comprised of under-23 British rowers who aspire to compete in the Olympics. Bucknell lost by two boat lengths and faced a challenging headwind throughout the 1,500-meter race. Leander went on to win the event.
The Bison second varsity eight lost to University College Dublin by less than a second in what was possibly the most exciting race of the weekend. Bucknell was trailing throughout the first half of the race, but came from behind to nearly defeat its opponent. Trinity College's Varsity Eight, which won the Division III national championship, won the event.
Johnson, who faced a formidable rower from Hollingwoth Rowing Club, had a solid race after rowing in a single for less than a year, but came up short.
"This trip was a great experience for all our women and I'm very proud of how they approached the entire trip, including racing at the Women's Henley Regatta," said Bison head coach Stephen Kish, who last brought his team to England in 2004. "The whole team had a great season and it was very special for this group to have the opportunity to travel to England and broaden its experience of the sport."
The Henley Women's Regatta was the final competition for Bucknell in the 2007-08 academic year. It was another banner campaign for the Bison, who won their third consecutive Patriot League title and claimed their second straight crowns at both the Murphy Cup and ECAC Metro Championship. The varsity eight won the Knecht Cup, while Michigan, Ohio State, Tennessee and Virginia dotted a very difficult schedule. Additionally, the Bison competed at the Eastern Sprints for the first time in program history and took eighth place out of 18 teams in the very competitive field, while the Lightweight Eight advanced to the Grand Final at the IRA Regatta for the third straight year.
