Bucknell Baseball Edged by Tulane, 4-1, on Day Two of NCAA Regional Action

TALLAHASSEE, Fl. - The Bucknell baseball team saw its seven game winning streak come to an end on Saturday night, falling 4-1 to Tulane on the second day of NCAA Regional action at Dick Howser Stadium. The Bison (30-23-2) will now face host Florida State in an elimination game tomorrow, Sunday, May 31, with first pitch slated for 1:07 p.m. The rematch between Bucknell and FSU will be broadcast by Sun Sports and can be seen nationally on Direct TV (Channel 632) and on Dish Network (Channel 422). In the first meeting between the squads to open the tournament, the Bison upset the No. 2-ranked Seminoles, 7-0.
Not only did the Bison have their stretch of seven consecutive victories halted tonight, but also had a streak of six straight contests with at least 10 hits stopped by the Green Wave, who move to 39-20-1 on the season.
Tulane's offense also snapped a 16-inning shutout streak by Bucknell pitchers with two runs in the bottom of the third. Anthony Scelfo walked and Seth Henry reached on a fielder's choice. Following a wild pitch that moved the runners into scoring position, Rob Segedin drove in the pair with a single to left.
The Green Wave added two more in their next turn at bat. With two out, Josh Prince singled to shallow center, Scott Powell reached with a walk and Scelfo plated the runs with a triple to the left centerfield gap.
In the fifth, the Orange and Blue loaded the bases with less than two outs on two walks and a hit batter, but could not score. The Bison managed to push across one run without a hit in the top of the sixth, what would prove to be their only run of the contest. Sophomore Andrew Brouse (Kreamer, Pa./Midd-West) and senior Shawn Hirsch (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) drew back-to-back one-out walks. Brouse eventually came home on a wild pitch after moving to third on a fly ball to center field by senior Austin Turban (Northfield, Ill./New Trier).
Bucknell tallied just three base knocks on the night as Tulane out-hit the Orange and Blue, 7-3. The three hits for the Bison, all singles, came in the first, third and eighth innings, off the bats of sophomore Ben Allen (Port Royal, Pa./Juniata), junior Bret Sokirka (Wyoming, Pa./Wyoming Area) and senior Jason Buursma (Seattle, Wash./Lakeside School), respectively.
Freshman Eric Jarrett (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) started for Bucknell and took the loss (5-6). He allowed four runs on six hits with three walks and three strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work. Buursma relieved him and pitched the remaining 4.1 scoreless innings, letting up just one hit with no walks and three strikeouts to extend his streak to 17.1 straight shutout innings, a stretch that dates back to the squad's 4-3 loss to Lehigh on April 26.
Matt Petiton picked up the win (7-1) for Tulane. He pitched 5.1 innings and gave up one run on two hits with five walks and two strikeouts. Preston Claiborne relieved him in the sixth and earned the save (3). He allowed only one hit in the final 3.2 innings, walked none and struck out four.
Josh Prince was the lone member of the Green Wave to finish the evening with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored. Scelfo and Segedin drove in two runs apiece.
