Bucknell Men's Tennis To Play Four Matches On The Road This Week

LEWISBURG, Pa. - After defeating Colgate for the first time since 1998 and picking up its first Patriot League win of the season this past Saturday, the Bucknell men's tennis team is now prepared to play four matches on the road this week. The Bison will open play against Penn State on Wednesday, April 9 at 3 p.m., before three straight league matches. The Bison will travel to Lehigh on Thursday, April 10, to Army on Saturday, April 12, and to Lafayette on Sunday, April 13. Bucknell currently owns a record of 8-6 overall and 1-1 in league play.
Bucknell Men's Tennis Notebook
Last Time Out ... Against Colgate, April 5 -
- Bucknell picked up its first league win of the season, upsetting Colgate for the first time since 1998, 4-3 in Ithaca, N.Y.
- Colgate took the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and 3 positions. At No. 2, junior Jonathan Brenner (Manhasset, N.Y./Chaminade) and freshman Anton Kovic (Montreal, Quebec/Milton Academy (Mass.)) improved to 8-5 on the season, picking up the lone doubles win for the Bison against John Nogueras and Reid Kiyabu.
- In singles play, junior Ryan Sandburg (Orange, Calif./Canyon) picked up the first win for the Bison at the No. 2 position. He defeated Nogueras, 6-1, 6-2, to move to 9-6 overall and 5-5 at No. 2 this spring. Then, at No. 4, Brenner won against Jamie Pellechi, 6-4, 7-5, to improve to 8-7 overall and 3-6 at No. 4. Freshman Mark Malloy (Bronxville, N.Y./Hackley School) was victorious over Goussiantnikov at No. 6, 6-3, 6-0, bringing his record to 8-5 overall and 2-2 at No. 6. Sophomore Zach Hascoe (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick) had the clutch win for the Bison, defeating Deck, 7-6 (4) and 7-6 (4) at No. 3 to improve to 8-5 overall and 5-5 at No. 3.
The Penn State Nittany Lions -
- Penn State currently holds a record of 11-9 this season.
- Last time the Bison faced the Nittany Lions, on Feb. 22, 2007, Penn State came away with the 7-0 win.
- In a series that began in 1921, Bucknell has defeated Penn State on 14 occasions, suffered 56 losses and has tied twice.
The Lehigh Mountain Hawks -
- Lehigh posts a season record of 5-9 and 1-1 in league play.
- On Jan. 31, Lehigh was picked fifth in the Patriot League Preseason Poll with 31 points.
- In a series that began in 1921, Bucknell has picked up 32 wins and has suffered 37 losses to the Mountain Hawks.
- Last season, Bucknell defeated Lehigh, 4-3, on April 12, 2007, and then again in the Patriot League tournament by a score of 4-0.
The Army Black Knights -
- Army currently holds a season record of 12-5 and 3-0 in league play.
- On Jan. 31, Army was picked second in the Patriot League Preseason Poll with 64 points and four first-place votes.
- In a series that began in 1971, Bucknell has defeated Army three times and has lost twice against the Black Knights.
- Last season, Army topped Bucknell, 5-2, on April 1, 2007.
The Lafayette Leopards -
- The Leopards are currently 4-4 overall and 1-2 in league play. Before facing Bucknell this Sunday, Lafayette will play Saint Francis (N.Y.) on Wednesday, April 8, and Colgate on Saturday, April 12.
- On Jan. 31, Lafayette was picked sixth in the Patriot League Preseason Poll with 25 points.
- In a series that began in 1936, Bucknell has defeated Lafayette 39 times and has suffered 20 losses to the Leopards.
- Last season, Bucknell came away with a 7-0 win against Lafayette on April 15, 2007.
Bucknell Team Leaders -
- After Bucknell's match against Colgate this past Saturday, Malloy continues to lead the Bison in doubles wins this season, with ten. Senior Ben Young (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan), senior Ira Reibeisen (Armonk, N.Y./Rye Country Day-Upper School) and Sandburg follow, each with nine doubles wins. Sandburg now leads Bucknell in singles wins this spring, adding his ninth of the season against the Raiders on April 5.

Bison Honors in 2007-08 -
- On Jan. 31, Bucknell men's tennis was picked third in the Patriot League Preseason Poll with 48 points. Navy led the way in first with 70 points and 10 first-place votes and Army followed in second with 64 points and four first-place votes. Rounding out the list was fourth-place Colgate (44 points), fifth-place Lehigh (31 points), sixth-place Lafayette (25 points) and seventh-place Holy Cross (12 points).
- On Nov. 14, Reibeisen was named Patriot League Player of the Month and on Oct. 3, he received an honorable mention for Player of the Month.
Looking Ahead -
- After this week's matches, Bucknell will have its final home match of the season against Delaware on April 22. The Orange and Blue will then travel to Bloomsburg on April 23, for one last match before the Patriot League tournament, scheduled for April 25-27, in Hamilton, N.Y.
