
Bison Men's Track and Field Places Second At Bucknell Team Challenge

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's track and field team notched a second-place finish at the Bucknell Team Challenge on Saturday. The Bison compiled a total of 152 points behind a first-place Penn State squad (237.5 points) in the only regular season scored meet for the Orange and Blue this spring. Saturday's meet was also Senior Day, marking Bucknell's last home meet this year.
Junior Kevin Macleod (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) won the 400-meter hurdles with an IC4A-qualifying time of 52.52. His finish was a career best and the second-best time in Bucknell history. Also winning an event was junior Kerry Boyle (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton). He took first in the 400-meter dash, running an IC4A-qualifying time of 47.61, while freshman Guy Castranova (Trenton, N.J./Notre Dame) also scored in the event, placing fifth in 48.51.
In the high jump, freshman Nicholas Hruch (Sykesville, Md./Liberty) posted an IC4A-qualifying mark of 6-8 1/4 to take second. His height tied the third-best mark in Bucknell history. Also scoring in the event was freshman Drew Fitzgerald (Ballston Spa, Pa./Ballston Spa). He finished third with a height of 6-6 1/4. Fitzgerald went on to score in the pole vault, placing third with a height of 14-9 to tie sophomore Ryan White (Elkins Park, Pa./Father Judge), who also went 14-9.
Bucknell's 4x800 relay squad of sophomore Kyle Ramer (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield), senior Wallace Campbell (Montgomery, Ala./Montgomery Acad.), freshman Clayton Smith (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII) and Hruch won the event with a time of 7:53.78.
The Bison swept the top-three places in the javelin throw. Junior Chris Gabryluk (Bath, Pa./Northampton) won the event (187-6) and was followed by freshman Michael Deatherage (Montclair, N.J./Montclair Christian Academy) in second (177-1) and senior Eric Weaver (Apollo, Pa./Kiski Area) in third (161-1). Also scoring in the javelin was senior John Kobilis (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton) in sixth (143-0).
In the 800-meter run, Ramer paced Bucknell with a third-place finish (1:54.50), while freshman John Picardo (Rochester, N.Y./Hilton Central) followed in fifth (1:55.92). Senior Andrew Corral (Bellport, N.Y./Bellport) led Bucknell in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. He ran a time of 9:33.70 for fifth place. In the 3,000-meter run, senior William Holleran (San Rafael, Calif./St. Ignatius Academy) and junior Clinton Orloski (Butler, Pa./Slippery Rock) placed in fourth (8:44.13) and fifth (8:48.01), respectively.
Sophomore Andrew Yehl (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) and MacLeod placed in second (14.98) and third (15.16), respectively, in the 110-meter hurdles.
Senior James Meyer (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Pacific Palisades) and sophomore Timothy Medlock (Evan Mills, N.Y./Indian River) scored in the discus, with Meyer placing fourth (140-10) and Medlock taking fifth (140-6). Medlock went on to place fifth in the shot put with a distance of 49-6 1/2 and freshman Zachary Shapiro (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) followed in sixth with a mark of 48-6 3/4.
In the triple jump, sophomore Kyle Anthony (Barryville, N.Y./Eldred Central) led the way for Bucknell in third with a distance of 47-6 1/4, while freshman Daniel Kubinski (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Preparatory School) also picked up team points with a fifth-place finish (44-7 1/2). Anthony went on to finish third in the long jump (22-8), while senior Michael Contino (Broomall, Pa./Episcopal Acad.) and Kubinski also scored, finishing fourth (21-4) and fifth (21-3 1/2), respectively.
Bucknell's 4x100 relay squad of senior Matthew Johnson (Newburgh, N.Y./Marlboro Central), junior Jay Harper (Maple Heights, Ohio/Maple Heights), sophomore Jason Davis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) and Castranova ran a time of 42.75 for fourth. In the 4x400 relay, sophomore Clement Gyan (Yonkers, N.Y./Abraham Lincoln), senior Brian Mooney (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili), freshman Matt Bender (Holland, N.Y./Holland Central) and freshman John Picardo (Rochester, N.Y./Hilton Central), scored with a sixth-place finish (3:23.59).
Up next, the Bucknell men's and women's track and field teams will have athletes competing at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, April 24-26, and will also send athletes to Saint Francis (Pa.)'s Red Flash Open on April 26.
