Bucknell Women's Tennis Falls To Army, 5-2

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Bucknell women's tennis team opened a two-match weekend against league opponents with a 5-2 loss at Army, Saturday afternoon. It was Bucknell's first loss in league play this season as the Bison moved to a record of 7-8 overall and 2-1 in the Patriot League. Army moved to 21-7 overall and remained undefeated in the league with a record of 4-0.
The Black Knights took the doubles point, winning at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. At No. 1 doubles, sophomore Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) and freshman Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) were defeated by Anne Houghton and Niki Flach by a score of 8-5 to bring the pair to 7-3 this season. At No. 2, sophomore Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School) and sophomore Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) picked up the lone doubles win for the Bison, beating Sarah Giles-Madden and Kristin Beehler by a score of 8-6, bringing the pair to 6-7 this spring. At No. 3, freshman Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) and senior Caitlin Baffa (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills High School East), were defeated by Bridie Burke and Christine Limsiaco by a score of 8-3 at the third position. Baffa and Dwojewski now own a record of 6-7 this spring.
In singles, Bucknell picked up wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Gamboa improved to 5-5 at the second position and 5-8 overall with a win against Flach, 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-3 while Lucido moved to 5-4 at the third position and 9-6 overall with a win against Giles-Madden, 7-6 (8), 6-3.
Army's Houghton defeated Varela, 6-4, 6-1, at the first position, while Calcaterra fell to Beehler at the fourth position by a score of 6-1, 6-1. Rounding out singles play, Dwojewski dropped her match at No. 5 by a score of 6-2, 7-5, to Caitlin Finnegan and freshman Lauren Rottkamp (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) dropped her match at No. 6 to Diana Alquero by a score of 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.
Despite a doubles loss on Saturday, Lucido continues to lead the Bison in doubles wins with eight this season and Varela follows with seven. In singles, Lucido now ties Rottkamp for a team-high of nine wins this spring.
Bucknell is set to play its second consecutive Patriot League match this weekend on Sunday in Easton, Pa. against Lafayette at 10 a.m.
