Bucknell Women's Tennis Closes Out Regular Season League Play With 6-1 Win At Lafayette

EASTON, Pa. - The Bucknell women's tennis team concluded a two-match weekend on the road against league opponents on Sunday morning, with a 6-1 win over Lafayette. The Bison now own a record of 8-8 overall and 3-1 in the Patriot League after a loss against Army on Saturday and Sunday's win over Lafayette. The Leopards move to a season record of 4-5 and 0-4 in league play.
To open the day, Bucknell took the doubles point, winning at all three positions. Sophomore Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) and freshman Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) went 8-1 over Ansley Scudder and Sarah Sykes at the first position to improve to 8-3 this spring. At No. 2, junior Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School) and sophomore Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) picked up their second win of the weekend, defeating Jacqui Bonder and Rachel Rohinsky by a score of 8-0, to bring the pair to 7-7 overall. At the third position, senior Caitlin Baffa (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills High School East) and freshman Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) topped Kristie Cavanagh and Emily DeLuca by a score of 8-1 to improve to 4-8 this spring.
Bucknell swept five matches in singles play. First off the court was freshman Lauren Rottkamp (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor). She defeated DeLuca at the sixth position by a score of 6-0, 6-0, to improve to 10-4 this spring. Next, Lucido topped Bonder at No. 3, 6-0, 6-1, to pick up her second win of the weekend and move to a record of 10-6. Dwojewski was next to finish, moving to 6-9 this season with a win over Cavanagh, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 5. Gamboa had her second win of the weekend, topping Sykes at No. 2, 6-2, 6-1, to improve to a record of 5-9 this season, and Varela was victorious over Scudder at No. 1, 6-2, 6-1, moving to 6-4 overall. Last off the court was Calcaterra; she dropped her match, 7-5, 6-1, as Rohinski picked up the lone win of the day for the Leopards.
After this weekend's pair of league matches, Lucido continues to lead the Bison in doubles wins, picking up her ninth of the season on Sunday morning, while Varela follows with eight. In singles, Rottkamp and Lucido remain tied for a team-high, each picking up their 10th of the spring against Lafayette.
The Bison are now prepared to travel to West Point, N.Y. once again; the Patriot League tournament is scheduled for this weekend, April 18-20, hosted by Army. First, Bucknell will make up a postponed match at Villanova, this Wednesday at 3 p.m.
