LEWISBURG, Pa. - Offensive heroes John Togneri and Austin Winter garnered most of the headlines following Bucknell's thrilling 8-7 triple-overtime victory over No. 20 Ohio State on Saturday, but the comeback win would not have been possible without the defense holding the Buckeyes to just a single goal over the final 39 minutes of play. Right in the middle of that sweltering defensive effort was junior Tom Izard (West Hartford, Conn./Hotchkiss), who was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.
Izard, in his first year as a starting defenseman, earned his first career Patriot League weekly honor. He collected a career-high seven ground balls in the win over Ohio State, and he also assisted on Winter's second-quarter goal that gave the Bison a 3-1 lead.
Bucknell trailed 6-4 after the Buckeyes scored 29 seconds into the second half, but the Bison allowed only one more goal the rest of the way. Winter tied it with 3:35 to play in regulation, then John Togneri won it with 2:25 to play in the third overtime period.
Junior goalie Nick Sciubba, who was named to the Patriot League weekly honor roll, made 12 saves in the victory, five of them coming in the fourth quarter.
Now 2-1 on the season with two one-goal victories, the Bison are back home on Saturday at 1 p.m. to take on Mount St. Mary's.
