
Bucknell Men's Tennis Drops Close Match To UMBC, 4-3

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's tennis team played its second of three matches this week, falling to UMBC with a score of 4-3 at home, Saturday afternoon. The Bison snapped a five-match winning streak and move to 7-4 on the season, while the Retrievers are now 8-4 in 2008. Bucknell got off to an early lead, taking the doubles point after picking up wins at both the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. Senior Ira Reibeisen (Armonk, N.Y./Rye Country Day-Upper School) and junior Ryan Sandburg (Orange, Calif./Canyon) won their eighth match of the season (8-2) against David Jackson and Irfan Shamasdin, 8-6, at the No. 1 spot. At No. 2, junior Jonathan Brenner (Manhasset, N.Y./Chaminade) and freshman Anton Kovic (Montreal, Quebec/Milton Academy (Mass.)) fell to Nick Savage-Pollock and Fernando Ferreira, 8-3, to bring their spring record to 7-3. Rounding out doubles, senior Ben Young (New Canaan, Conn,/New Canaan) and freshman Mark Malloy (Bronxville, N.Y./Hackley School) also picked up their eighth win of the season (8-2) going 8-6 over Chris Meyer and Logan Bricker at the No. 3 spot.
In singles play, Reibeisen improved to 6-2 at the No. 1 position, defeating Meyer, 6-3, 6-3. Sandburg also won his singles match, topping Savage-Pollock, 6-1, 6-4, at the No. 2 spot. Sandburg is now 7-5 on the season and 4-4 at No. 2.
At the No. 3 position, sophomore Zach Hascoe (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick) dropped his match to Shamasdin, 6-1, 6-0, to bring his record to 5-5 (3-5 at No. 3) for the season. Brenner played at No. 4, and fell to Jackson, 7-5 and then by default to move him to 7-5 (2-5 at No. 4) this spring. At No. 5, UMBC's Bricker defeated Kovic, 6-4, 6-2, to bring Kovic to 7-5 (1-2 at No. 5) overall. Rounding out doubles play, Malloy fell to Ferreira at No. 6, 6-7, 6-4, 1-0 and then by default (7-4; 1-2 at No. 6).
After Saturday's match against the Retrievers, Malloy continues to lead the Bison in doubles wins this season, with nine. Young, Reibeisen and Sandburg follow, each with seven doubles wins. In singles, Sansburg, Brenner, Kovic and Malloy are tied for a team-high of seven wins.
Reibeisen continues to set Bucknell's all-time combined victories record, now with 138 wins, while Sandburg now tallies 109 career victories, to move into second all-time. Reibeisen owns Bucknell's all-time singles victories record with 73 wins and Sandburg sits at No. 10 with 43 wins. Reibeisen and Sandburg remain tied for the all-time doubles victories record, now with 65. Brenner follows at No. 3 for career doubles wins, with 55.
The Bison will wrap up a three-match week and begin Patriot League play on Sunday. Bucknell will face Navy at home, tomorrow at 1 p.m.
