
Bucknell Men's Tennis Opens Patriot League Play With 4-1 Loss Against Navy

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - The Bucknell men's tennis team wrapped up a three match week at the West Branch Tennis Club on Sunday afternoon, with a 4-1 loss against Navy to open 2008 Patriot League Play. The Bison are now 7-5 this season and 0-1 in the Patriot League, while the Midshipmen move to 15-7 and 3-0 in league competition. The Orange and Blue opened the week with a 7-0 win against Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday afternoon and suffered a close 4-3 loss against UMBC, Saturday.
Navy took the doubles point, winning all three matches. Senior Ira Reibeisen (Armonk, N.Y./Rye Country Day-Upper School) and junior Ryan Sandburg (Orange, Calif./Canyon) were defeated by Johnny Waters and Nate Nelms at the No. 1 position, to bring the pair to 8-3 this season. At the No. 2 position, junior Jonathan Brenner (Manhasset, N.Y./Chaminade) and freshman Anton Kovic (Montreal, Quebec/Milton Academy (Mass.)) played Alex James and Ramsey Lemaich,8-2, to move them to 7-4 this spring. Rounding out doubles, senior Ben Young (New Canaan, Conn,/New Canaan) and freshman Mark Malloy (Bronxville, N.Y./Hackley School) moved their season record to 8-3 with an 8-3 loss against Jason Hill and Nick Birger at No. 3.
In singles play, Reibeisen improved to 6-3 at the No. 1 position, falling to Nelms, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 and at No. 2, Sandburg was defeated by Waters, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, to move him to 7-6 overall and 4-5 at No. 2. At the No. 3 position, sophomore Zach Hascoe (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick) picked up the lone win for the Bison. He defeated Hill, 6-2, 5-7, 6-3, to move him to 6-5 (4-5 at No. 3) this season.
Brenner played at No. 4, and fell to Lemaich, 3-6, 6-7 (3), making his season record 7-6 and 2-6 at the No. 4 position. At both the No. 5 and No. 6 positions, Kovic and Young did not finish. At No. 5, James was leading Kovic, 7-5, and at No. 6, Young and Navy's Owen Bullard were tied at 1-1.
After Sunday afternoon's match against the Midshipmen, Malloy continues to lead the Bison in doubles wins this season, with nine. Young, Reibeisen and Sandburg follow, each with eight doubles wins. In singles, Sandburg, Brenner, Kovic and Malloy are tied for a team-high of seven wins.
Reibeisen continues to set Bucknell's all-time combined victories record, now with 138 wins, while Sandburg now tallies 109 career victories, to move into second all-time. Reibeisen owns Bucknell's all-time singles victories record with 73 wins and Sandburg sits at No. 8 with 44 wins. Reibeisen and Sandburg remain tied for the all-time doubles victories record, now with 65. Brenner follows at No. 3 for career doubles wins, with 55.
The Bison are now scheduled to make up this past week's postponed match at Villanova on Wednesday, April 2. The Orange and Blue will then travel to Colgate on Saturday, April 5 for a Patriot League match-up at 1 p.m.
