LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell junior defenseman Billy Haire (Darien, Conn./Darien) was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday after keying a suffocating team defensive effort in a 14-6 win over Mount St. Mary's last week.
He played only the first three quarters before Bucknell emptied the bench, and during that time the Bison defense gave up only three goals and 17 shots. Haire picked up four ground balls, the most among Bucknell defenders.
Bucknell has now won the last two defensive player of the week citations, with junior Tom Izard earning the award the previous week.
A First Team All-Patriot League selection in 2007, Haire was named a 2008 Inside Lacrosse Preseason Honorable Mention All-American.
Following their 9-8 win over No. 16 Fairfield on Tuesday, the 14th-ranked Bison have now won four straight to get to 4-1 on the season. Bucknell hosts Lafayette on Saturday at 1 p.m. in its first Patriot League contest of the season.
