
Bucknell Women's Tennis Splits Road Matches, Saturday Night

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Bucknell women's tennis team was defeated by Brown, 7-0, in the first of two matches on the road, Saturday night, and went on to defeat the University of Rhode Island, 7-0, to bring the Bison to 2-5 on the season after a weekend on the road.
Sophomore Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) and freshman Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md. / St. Paul's School for Girls) play at No. 1 doubles, falling to Bianca Aboubakare and Marisa Schonfeld, 8-5, while sophomore Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) and junior Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School) dropped their match at No. 2 to Kelley Kirkpatrick and Sara Mansur, 8-3. Rounding out doubles play, senior Caitlin Baffa (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills High School East) and freshman Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) were defeated by Brett Finkelstein and Itsuka Kurihara, 8-0.
At No. 1 singles, Varela fell, 6-4, 6-3 to Abouakare, while Finkelstein went 6-2, 6-2 over Gamboa at No. 2. Brown's Tanja Vucetic defeated Lucido, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5, at No. 3 and Calcaterra fell, 6-1, 6-0, to Schonfeld at No. 4. Rounding out singles play, Dwojewski was defeated, 6-3, 7-5, by Alexa Baggio at No. 5 and freshman Lauren Rottkamp (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) dropped her No. 6 match, 6-0, 6-2.
The Orange and Blue went on to sweep URI with a 7-0 win directly following the Brown match Saturday night. At No.1 doubles, Varela and Lucido went 8-2 over URI's Nyssa Peele and Grace Hedstrom while at No.2, Gamboa and Calcaterra went 8-5 over Christen Cadigan and Valerie Chacan. Bucknell fell at the No. 3 position,with Baffa and Dwojewski dropping their match, 8-3, to Steff Catanzano and Amanda Barletta, but the Bison had already picked up the doubles point with wins at the top-two spots.
In singles, Varela defeated Peele, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 1, while Gamboa went 2-6, 6-4 and 6-0 in the tie breaker over Hedstrom at No. 2. Lucido picked up a win at the No. 3 spot against Catanzano, 6-1, 3-6 and 10-6 in the tie breaker while Calcaterra defeated Chacan, 6-4, 6-2, at No.4. To round out singles play, Dwojewski topped Barletta, 7-6, 4-6 and 10-2 in the tie breaker at No. 5, and Rottkamp topped Kristen Liu 6-0, 6-2, at No. 6.
Following Saturday night's match against Rhode Island, the Bison will return home on March 18 to host Fairleigh Dickinson at 3 p.m.
