
Bucknell Women's Tennis Opens Spring Break Week With 7-0 Sweep Over Northwestern (Minn.)

HILTON HEAD, S.C. - The Bucknell women's tennis team started its spring break week in Hilton Head, S.C. with a 7-0 win over Northwestern College of Minnesota on Tuesday afternoon, bringing the Bison to 3-5 on the season while Northwestern now owns a record of 2-1 in 2008.
Freshman Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Pauls School For Girls) played at the No. 1 position for the third time this season, defeating Kayla Ross, 6-0, 6-0, to bring her singles record to 4-4 on the year. Lucido is currently undefeated at the No. 1 position with a record of 3-0.
At No. 2, sophomore Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) went 6-0, 6-3 over Wendy Miller, taking her to 3-5 this season (1-1 at No. 2). Freshman Lauren Rottkamp (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) played at the No. 3 position for the first time this season. She defeated Rebecca Leland, 6-0, 6-0, to make her 4-2 in singles this spring.
At No. 4 singles, senior Caitlin Baffa (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills High School East) won her match over Johanna Alex, 6-1, 6-0, to bring her to 2-4 on the season (1-1 at No. 4).
Sophomore Renee Weissend (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) made her first appearance at the No. 5 position, while sophomore Kirstyn Sotak (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Hathaway Brown) appeared in her first dual singles match this season (at No. 6). Weissend topped Jenn Porter, 3-6, 6-3 and 10-7 in the tie-breaker, while Sotak finished ahead of Amy Green, 6-3, 6-0.
In doubles play, Lucido picked up her second win of the day with sophomore partner Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy). The pair went 8-2 over Ross and Miller, bringing their season record to 2-2 at No. 1. At the No. 2 position, Calcaterra and junior Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School) improved to 2-5 on the year (1-2 at No. 2) after defeating Alex and Leland, 8-0. Baffa and freshman Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) notched their first doubles win this season to make them 1-5 overall (1-3 at No. 3) after winning against Porter and Green, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3.
After Tuesday's match, Lucido and Rottkamp lead the Bison in singles wins this season, with each recording four. Lucido also paces the Bison with three doubles wins this season (two when paired with Varela and one when paired with Baffa).
The Bison will wrap up play at Hilton Head on Friday, March 14, with a match against Winston Salem State at 6 p.m.
