Bucknell Women's Tennis Opens Weekend With Loss Against Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y. - The Bucknell women's tennis team opened a three-match weekend on Saturday morning, with a 7-0 loss against Cornell, moving the Bison to 0-3 on the season.
In singles play, Elizabeth Googe of Cornell defeated junior Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School), 6-3, 7-5, at the No. 1 position while Sinziana Chis topped freshman Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Pauls School For Girls), 7-6, 6-4 at No. 2. At the No. 3 spot, sophomore Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) fell to Tamara John, 6-2, 6-2, and Dana Cruite went 6-3, 6-3, over freshman Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) at the No. 4 position. Rounding out singles play, senior Caitlin Baffa (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills High School East) dropped her match at No. 5 to Melissa Orteza, 6-1, 6-1, and at No. 6, sophomore Renee Weissend (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) fell to Catherine Duboc, 6-1, 6-1.
In No. 1 doubles, Gamboa and Calcaterra were defeated by Googe and John, 8-6, while Cruite and Shayna Miller topped Dwojewski and Baffa, 8-1, at No. 2. Rounding out doubles play, Lucido and freshman Lauren Rottkamp (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) fell to Chis and Duboc, 8-3, at the No. 3 position.
"We played better today than we did last week, so this is a big step for us," said Bucknell assistant coach Larry Peterson. "We are playing competition that is just better than us at this point in the season, and see this as an opportunity to grow and be better prepared for matches later in the spring. We are not displeased with the result."
The Bison will continue play in Ithaca, against Quinnipiac at 4 p.m. this afternoon, and will wrap up this weekend on the road at Syracuse, tomorrow at 10 a.m.
