Bucknell Women's Tennis Closes Out Weekend With 6-1 Loss At Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Bucknell women's tennis team wrapped up a weekend of play with a 6-1 loss against Syracuse on Sunday morning. This Bison spent the weekend on the road, falling to Cornell, 7-0, Saturday morning and then picking up a win against Quinnipiac, 6-1, Saturday afternoon in Ithaca, N.Y. After this weekend's matches, Bucknell is now 1-4 on the season.
At No. 1 singles, Christina Tan of Syracuse defeated junior Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School), 6-4, 6-1, while freshman Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Pauls School for Girls) dropped her match, 6-3, 6-3, to Simone Kalhorne at the No. 2 spot. In No. 3 singles, Maria Vasilyeva topped sophomore Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) 6-2, 6-1, while freshman Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) fell to Ashley Spicer, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 4. At the No. 5 position, senior Caitlin Baffa (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills High School East) finished behind Jacquellyne Tang, 6-2, 6-0. Picking up the lone win for the Bison was freshman Lauren Rottkamp (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor). At the No. 6 position she went 6-3, 7-6 and 7-5 in the tie-breaker over Chelsea Jones for her second win of the weekend in singles play.
In doubles, Gamboa and Calcaterra fell to Tan and Kalhorne, 8-3, at No. 1, while Vasilyeva and Jones topped Baffa and Lucido, 8-7 and 7-4 in the tie-breaker at No. 2. Rounding out doubles play, Spicer and Tang went 8-1 over Dwojewski and sophomore Renee Weissend (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima).
The Bison will be back in action on March 1, taking on both Brown and the University of Rhode Island in Providence, R.I.
