LEWISBURG, Pa. - Freshman attackman Ryan Klipstein (Califon, N.J./Rutgers Prep) scored his first four career goals and senior midfielder Nick Marks (Barrington, Ill./Salisbury School) tallied the tie-breaking goal with 5:49 to play, leading the 15th-ranked Bucknell men's lacrosse team to a tense 10-9 victory over Hobart at sunny Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Klipstein also had an assist, giving him a five-point day for the Bison, who improved to 1-1. Tim Brandau (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh) added two goals and Austin Winter (Boonton Twp., N.J./Mountain Lakes) had a goal and two assists.
Bucknell led for most of the game, until Hobart (0-1) rallied from a three-goal deficit to tie it in the fourth quarter. But Marks, who had not attempted a shot all day, dodged a defender and fired low past Statesman goalie Max Silberlicht to snap a 9-9 deadlock.
Hobart took two penalties in the final six minutes, allowing the Bison to kill some clock after taking the lead. The second of those infractions, a slash on defenseman Justin Hager, was officially whistled with 1:31 to play, but with Winter as the primary ballhandler, Bucknell stalled for about 90 seconds during the delayed penalty before the ball hit the ground, then ran the clock down inside 30 seconds left while man-up.
Just after the penalty expired, however, Hobart's Sean Murphy stole a pass and ran the length of the field before firing, but Bison goalie Nick Sciubba (Sea Cliff, N.Y./Salisbury School) came up with the last of his 14 saves with 17 seconds left. Mike Suits then fired a low shot just wide with three seconds left. With one final chance on a re-start from behind the cage, Jamie Kirk's pass in front could not connect and time expired.
Bucknell led 2-0 after one period, with Klipstein having a hand in both goals. First, he assisted on Perry Menzies' man-up goal just 2:13 into the contest, then about eight minutes later he scored his first career goal off an assist from Winter.
Hobart finally got on the board 28 seconds into the second period, when Suits scored on the man advantage. Just 11 seconds later, freshman long-pole Alex Caton tallied the first of his career to tie the game at 2.
Bucknell netted four of the next five, however. The Bison regained the lead on a terrific thread-the-needle pass from Winter to Joe Mele (Westbury, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) on the weak side for a slam dunk. Four minutes later Winter beat a defender on his own to make it 4-2.
Klipstein's second goal, off a John Togneri (Longmeadow, Mass./Loomis Chaffee) feed, came with just 13 second left in the half and put the Bison ahead 5-3 at the break. Klipstein scored again almost eight minutes into the third quarter to put Bucknell ahead by three goals for the first time.
The two teams alternated the next five goals in a wild third quarter, with Brandau scoring twice for Bucknell on power moves to the goal. The latter came with 51 seconds left in the third quarter and put the Bison in front 8-5.
Hobart answered with only three seconds left in the period when Kevin Curtin walked in alone for one of his team-leading three goals. The Statesmen pulled within 8-7 early in the fourth quarter on a controversial goal that appeared to hit the crossbar but was ruled to have snuck under the pipe, giving Mike Lazore his second goal of the day.
Klipstein scored 49 seconds later off another Togneri assist to put the Bison back up 9-7, but Jeff Colburn and Curtin scored back-to-back, the latter tying the game at 9-all with 7:26 to play.
With about six minutes left Bucknell's riding unit forced one of its six failed clears on the day, and on the ensuing possession Marks scored the go-ahead tally.
Hobart posted 10 shots in each quarter, finishing with a 40-32 shot advantage. The Statesmen also had a big edge in faceoffs, winning 14 of 20, although Bison freshman Christian Tucker (Ringoes, N.J./Hunterdon Central) did win three big ones in a row in the fourth quarter.
Curtin and Kirk both had four points to lead Hobart. Curtin had three goals and an assist, while Kirk tallied a goal and three assists.
Bucknell returns to action next Saturday at 1 p.m. against Ohio State at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
