POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Ryan Schneider hit 13 of 19 shots and had 29 points, nine rebounds and five steals to lead Marist to a runaway 89-63 victory over Bucknell on Sunday afternoon at the McCann Center. G.W. Boon led the Bison with 14 and Bryan Cohen added 11, but a 33-7 run in the middle part of the game was too much to overcome.
Dejaun Goodwin scored 16 points and Javon Parris added 15 for the Red Foxes (5-8), who made 34 of 68 shots and became the first team this season to shoot 50 percent from the floor against Bucknell (3-8).
Marist put on quite a shooting display, led by Schneider. The Red Foxes hit 9 of 19 3-point shots (6 of 11 in the second half) and made a number of long jumpers just inside the arc. Marist was also strong at the defensive end, where it jumped passing lanes aggressively and came up with 13 steals among Bucknell's 19 turnovers. Bucknell's three starting guards combined for 15 of those turnovers.
The Bison did shot 55.6 percent in the second half after a 33.3 percent showing the first period, but much of Bucknell's offensive damage came after the game was already out of reach.
Marist came out of the locker room with a 37-24 lead and quickly turned it into a rout with a 22-5 run in the first 7:14 of the half. Schneider scored 10 of those points with an array of long fadeaway jumpers, and Mike Taylor hit a 3-pointer to cap the run and make it a 59-29 game.
Bucknell closed within 19 on 3-point plays by Darryl Shazier and Ryan Ebner and a 3-pointer by Boon, but Marist answered with 10 straight points, keyed by two more Taylor threes, to go back up by 29 at 73-44.
The Bison were plagued by turnovers and cold shooting for most of the night, and Marist outscored them 25-11 over the last nine minutes of the first half to take the 13-point lead. The Bison committed 12 turnovers in the first half, nine of them off steals from the Marist defense.
Bucknell made only 9 of 27 shots in the first half, 2 of 10 from 3-point range, while Marist shot 43.8 percent.
Boon scored nine of Bucknell's first 15 points, including seven straight at one point. Cohen's short bank shot gave the Bison a 13-12 lead, but Schneider answered with a 3-pointer to give the Red Foxes the lead for good.
With 1:26 left in the half Marist's Javon Parris converted a four-point play when he finished a layup while being fouled intentionally, and he made both free throws to give Marist a 32-24 lead. A reverse layup by Alex Vouyoukas and three points from Schneider made it an 11-2 run to finish the half.
Bucknell's walk-ons fared well late in the game. Ryan Ebner had five points and three rebounds in 12 minutes, local product Joe Mackey (Warwick, N.Y.) scored five points in three minutes, and Matt Fiery made two free throws and scored two points.
Leading scorer Patrick Behan, showing some lingering effects of a twisted ankle suffered late in the Richmond game earlier in the week, was held to six points, while No. 2 scorer Justin Castleberry was limited to one point.
Bucknell is back in action on Tuesday night at home against St. Bonaventure. Tip is at 7 p.m. at Sojka Pavilion.
