Bucknell's Selwood, Hennings, Ferraro Honored by NSCAA for Academic Work

LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Bucknell men's soccer team placed three student-athletes on the NSCAA/adidas Scholar All-East Region Team, with junior Patrick Selwood (Darnestown, Md./The Heights School) earning third team honors and seniors Chris Hennings (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) and Anthony Ferraro (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) capturing honorable mention honors.
Selwood and Hennings both earned ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District honors earlier this fall, with Hennings later becoming a national Academic All-American.
Selwood was a team co-captain this season and was one of the anchors of the Bucknell defense. He started all 19 games in 2008 and was named Most Valuable Player of the Days Inn Classic after helping lead the Bison to the team title. A men's soccer Student-Athlete Advisory Committee representative along with Hennings, Selwood is a philosophy and religion major with a 3.73 cumulative grade-point average.
Off the field Selwood is involved with the Catholic Campus Ministry and was the student founder of the St. Sebastian Society, an organization for Catholic student-athletes. The four-time Dean's List member and Patriot League Academic Honor Roll member has also interned in two law offices.
In November Hennings became Bucknell's 117th national Academic All-American. A senior academically but in just his third season of soccer at Bucknell after missing a year due to injury, Hennings enjoyed his best season in 2008. He ranked second in the Patriot League to teammate Conor O'Brien in points per game with 18 points in 19 games. The speedy forward also tied for second in the league in goals with seven and tied fifth in assists with four.
Hennings had a career day in a 5-4 win over Canisius on Aug. 31. He scored four goals in that game, including the tiebreaker with less than five minutes to play. He became the first Bucknell player in 40 years to score four in a game and tied school and league records in the process. Hennings also scored in Bucknell's 2-0 win over Penn State and added two more in a 3-0 win over Cornell. He also picked up assists on game-winning overtime goals against both Navy and Army in league play.
Off the field, Hennings has been just as impressive. At Bucknell he has served as a research assistant in the history department and as a teaching assistant for the freshman "Transition to College" course. He has participated in the Bucknell Tutoring Program, where he tutors two "at-risk" students for 90 minutes each week, and he also tutors at a local high school in his spare time.
A history major and mathematics and Spanish minor with a 3.66 cumulative grade-point average, Hennings is a member of the Phi Alpha Theta national honor society for history and the Kappa Delta Pi honor society for education. He is a chapter member of the Pennsylvania State Education Society (PSEA), a men's soccer representative on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and he was one of two students named to the Bucknell Committee on Athletics governance body.
Ferraro appeared in all 19 games with 10 starts this season, and he tied for third on the team with 12 points. Ferraro netted five goals and two assists, with two of the goals coming in the season finale against American. He also scored Bucknell's goal in the 74th minute in a 1-1 tie with 10th-ranked Ohio State.
Ferraro is a civil engineering major with a 3.31 cumulative GPA.
The Bison finished 8-8-3 in 2008.
