WASHINGTON, D.C. - Senior Anthony Ferraro (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) tallied two goals for Bucknell, but Luis Martinez scored with 6:22 left in the second overtime period to send American to a 3-2 win over the Bison on Saturday. Bucknell needed a victory and a Lafayette loss to gain a berth in the Patriot League Tournament but got neither, as Lafayette played to a scoreless tie with Holy Cross.
Bucknell's season ends with an 8-8-2 overall record, 3-4-0 in the Patriot League. American finished the regular season at 9-7-2, 5-1-1. The Eagles are assured of a postseason berth, and they will host next week's Patriot League Tournament unless Colgate defeats Lehigh at home on Saturday night.
With Bucknell fighting to stay alive in the playoff chase and American trying to clinch the No. 1 seed in the tournament, it was a tense, physical battle on a hot November day in the Nation's Capital. The game featured 26 total fouls, six yellow cards (three on each team) and two red cards (one each way).
After a scoreless first half, American scored first when Jamie Devlin knocked in a Tremaine Chinapoo cross just 2:50 into the second half. The Bison needed less than three minutes to respond, however, as Ferraro pounced on a bobble by Eagles keeper Matt Makowski and put it in to make it 1-1.
American went up 2-1 in the 61st minute when Karsten Smith sent Nick Kapus in for his second goal of the year.
Again, Bucknell had a quick retort, answering the American goal just 1:05 later on a restart after an Eagles player was booked with a yellow card after a foul. Ferraro scored his second goal of the day and fifth of the season off the feed from Patriot League scoring leader Conor O'Brien (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./St. Anthony's).
In the 76th minute, Kapus and Mark Schmiegel (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) were both sent off after a skirmish, and neither team could score again in regulation.
Knowing that a tie would not help them, the Bison pushed forward in overtime, and the Eagles capitalized in the 104th minute when Cameron Petty found Martinez 10 yards out for the winning score.
American finished with an 18-13 edge in shots, while the Bison took eight corner kicks to four for the Eagles. Will Byrne (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna) finished with five saves, while Makowski had seven for AU.
O'Brien's assist was his eighth of the season, which is tied for seventh-most in school history. The Bison junior also scored seven goals this season, and he finished the year on a five-game points streak. Ferraro enjoyed his first career multi-goal game. His five goals this season were more than his career total (4) coming into the year.
