Bucknell's Gonzalo DeLeon Named Conference Swimmer of the Week

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell sophomore Gonzalo DeLeon (Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland Regional) was named Patriot League Male Swimmer of the Week, on Tuesday, Nov. 25, one day after being named Damon's Bison Athlete of the Week. On Sunday, DeLeon set a school record in the 200-yard backstroke, while registering the third fastest time in Bucknell history in the 400 IM.
Against a field that included Binghamton, La Salle, TCNJ and Towson, DeLeon finished first in the 200 back, winning in one minute, 49.33 seconds. The Bison's previous top-time in the event was 1:50.11, recorded by Steve Droste in 1993. DeLeon's previous best time was 1:51.47, which he set while placing third at the 2008 Patriot League Championships. DeLeon was named First Team All-Patriot League in 2008, placing fourth in the 100 back and eighth in the 200 fly, in addition to his 200 back performance.
DeLeon's 400 IM time was 4:04.90, placing him second in the event on Sunday. The Bucknell record for the 400 IM is 4:03.93, held by John Hoffman since 2005. On Saturday, DeLeon competed in the 200 fly (1:56.60), placing ninth, and the 200 IM (2:03.10). The Bison finished first in the Bucknell Invitational.
DeLeon is a member of the Uruguay national team and ranks ninth in Bucknell history in the 100 back, with a time of 52.03 seconds. He has placed first in the 200 back in all five meets the Bison men have participated in this fall.
The Bucknell men's and women's swimming & diving teams will next compete on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, hosting Colgate at Kinney Natatorium.
