LEWISBURG, Pa. – Junior quarterback Marcello Trigg (Tampa, Fla./Robinson) and freshman defensive lineman Robert De La Rosa (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) each earned a weekly award from the Patriot League on Monday after helping the Bucknell football team to a 21-17 victory at Marist this past Saturday. Trigg earned his second Offensive Player of the Week honor this year, while De La Rosa became the first Bison to be named the league's Rookie of the Week. Bucknell has now had players earn each of the four weekly awards from the Patriot League this season.
Trigg, who ranks second nationally in passing efficiency, completed 19 of 26 passes for 217 yards, including 166 in the second half against the Red Foxes. The junior hooked up with Shaun Pasternak for the winning touchdown with 1:03 left in the fourth quarter. That completion capped a drive where Trigg was 6-for-7 for 88 yards.
Trigg, who surpassed 2,600 yards passing for his career, tossed two fourth-quarter touchdown passes in the victory, marking the sixth time in his career he has done that. He also rushed for a touchdown early in the second quarter, evening the score at 7-7.
The 19 completions for Trigg equaled a career high as he registered his third 200-yard game this season. That is the most by a Bison quarterback in one year since Todd Wenrich reached that plateau six times in 2001.
De La Rosa was voted the top rookie in the Patriot League last week because of his career-high nine tackles. Entering the contest De La Rosa had recorded just five stops from his defensive line position. Additionally, De La Rosa had one tackle for loss, giving him 2.5 this season.
A starter in all four games, De La Rosa has been the only freshman defensive player to earn a regular starting assignment. He has seen his tackle total raise each game from zero in the season opener against Duquesne to three against Robert Morris and then four opposite Cornell. De La Rosa ranked third on the team in tackles against Marist and is now tied for eighth overall this year.
Trigg and De La Rosa helped the Bison improve to 3-1 for the first time since 2004. Additionally, Bucknell is now 2-0 on the road for the first time since 1999.
The Bison will be back in action this Saturday, Oct. 11, when they host Hofstra at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. It will be Community Day, meaning fans will gain admission to the game free of charge.
