Bucknell Swimming & Diving Opens Season at UMBC

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Bucknell men's and women's swimming & diving teams began their 2008-2009 season with a non-scored meet with perennial swimming power UMBC in Baltimore, Md. The Bison and the Retrievers competed in 40 events on Saturday in preparation for their upcoming seasons.
Bucknell junior Courtney Warren (Montour Falls, N.Y./Watkins Glen) won both the women's 50- and 100-yard backstroke events. The defending 100 back Patriot League champion, Warren finished the 50 back in 27.74 seconds and the 100 back in 59.59 seconds. In the 200 back Warren placed third (2:13.89), while teammate Abigail Atkinson (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) finished second with a time of 2:13.29.
Sophomore Molly Goebel (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) was victorious in the 50 free for the Bison, touching the wall in 24.66 seconds. She finished third in the 100 free (54.57). Classmate Macey Keath (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) placed second in the 50 (32.24), 100 (1:08.64) and 200 (2:28.74) breaststroke. Bucknell junior Lauren Russell (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) finished second in the 100 (1:02.65) and the 400 IM (4:42.46), and third in the 200 IM (2:14.30)
The women's quartet of Warren, Kelly Morris (Metuchen, N.J./Metuchen), Goebel and Alexandra Lovallo (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) placed second in the 400 medley relay with a time of 4:05.63. Bucknell's Megan Mongan (Malvern, Pa./Villa Maria Academy), Atkinson, Sarah Pease (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) and Keath placed second in the 400 freestyle relay.
On the men's side, Bucknell swept the both the 100 and 200 IM events. Bison junior Luke Trafton (Bath, Maine/Morse) won the 100 IM in 55.87 seconds, while freshman Jonathan Podneisinski (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) won the 200 IM in 2:00.10. Podneisinski finished second in the 400 IM (4:18.44) and fourth in the 100 IM (56.98).
Gonzalo DeLeon (Ringwood, N.J./Lakewood Regional) captured first place in the men's 200 backstroke, swimming the race in 1:56.20. He finished second in the 50 back (25.78), and third in the 200 back (54.54). DeLeon was named First Team All-Patriot League last year.
Bison swimmers Taylor Harris (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central), Trafton, Ben Leboza (Green Oaks, Ill./Libertyville) and Matthew Segar (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) finished second in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:16.68. Harris, a freshman, finished second in the 50 butterfly (24.41), while placing third in the 100 (54.18) and 200 butterfly (2:02.28), all top times for a Bison swimmer.
Diving results were not yet available.
The Bison return to the pool on Saturday, Oct. 25, hosting Boston College at Kinney Natatorium.
