EASTON, Pa. - The Bucknell field hockey team lost its conference opener against Lafayette in Easton, Pa., 2-1 in double overtime. The Leopards' Maggie Condon scored five minutes and 54 seconds into the second extra period to win the game for Lafayette (8-4, 1-0). The Bison's record now stands at 7-4 overall.
Junior midfielder Megan Krebs (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./GAR Memorial) scored Bucknell's only goal of the game, assisted by Steph Graf (Jamison, Pa./Central Bucks East), giving the Bison a 1-0 lead at the 26:42 mark of the first half. It was her fourth goal of the season. The score stayed that way until only 4:57 remained in regulation, as Lafayette's Lindsay Manjo scored an unassisted goal to tie the game.
At the end of regulation, the Orange and Blue had outshot Lafayette 8-7 and had outcornered the Leopards 6-1. However, only two of the Bison's shots in regulation were on goal, while four of Lafayette's were.
The Leopards applied a lot of pressure on Bucknell's end of the field during the first overtime, attempting eight shots and seven penalty corners, compared to just two and one, respectively, for the Bison. Bucknell goalkeeper Sarah Zargarpour (North Vancouver, Canada/Handsworth Secondary) made three saves in the overtime to keep the game knotted at one.
Condon, the Patriot Leauge leader in goals and points, tallied her 11th goal of the year, 90:54 into the game. Jaclyn Disanti was credited with the assist. Condon attempted 11 of Lafayette's 16 shots, including six of her team's eight shots on goal.
Zargarpour finished the game with five saves, playing the entire second half and both overtimes, after junior Jessie Atieh (North Caldwell, N.J/West Essex) started the game for Bucknell. Atieh made one first half save. Senior Amanda Faust (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) led Bucknell with five shots, while Krebs and freshman Marci Richard (Oley, Pa./Oley Valley) each attempted two. All three players had one shot on goal.
Bucknell's next game is against Lehigh on Saturday, Oct. 11, at Graham Field at Holmes Stadium. The scheduled start time is 2 p.m. Lehigh (3-7, 0-1) lost its league opener, 3-1, in Hamilton, N.Y., against Colgate.
