PRINCETON, N.J. - Sarah Peteraf scored two goals to lead Princeton to a 3-0 non-conference women's soccer win over Bucknell Wednesday night. The Bison saw their three-game winning streak come to an end and fell to 10-6-2, while the Tigers improved to 10-2-2.
Bison head coach Ben Landis used 11 substitutes and gave freshman goalkeeper Colleen Garrehy (Danville, Calif./Carondelet) her first career start. Most important, his team came out healthy in advance of Saturday's critical Patriot League contest against American.
Peteraf got the Tigers on the board in the 32nd minute when she maneuvered around Garrehy and scored into an empty net for a 1-0 lead. Only eight minutes later Princeton went up 2-0 when Kalie Bartholomew redirected a corner kick into the net.
Peteraf scored again - her 11th goal of the year - in the 55th minute, with Jen Om collecting her second assist of the night to make it 3-0.
The shot tally was fairly even, with Princeton outshooting Bucknell 9-8. The Tigers did have nine corner kicks to Bucknell's two and had eight fouls to one for the Bison.
Garrehy finished with one save in her debut, while Alyssa Pont and Kristin Watson each played a half and combined for three saves for Princeton.
Christa Matlack (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport Area) took three shots for the Bison and just missed a header 10 minutes in that would have given them the early lead. Kelly Boswell (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) also took three shots, including one that hit the crossbar late in the match.
Bucknell hosts American on Saturday at 1 p.m., with Senior Day ceremonies preceding the game. Bucknell enters the final regular-season weekend in a tie for third place with Colgate in the Patriot League standings, but the Bison hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Raiders. American is only three points back, however, and can pull into a tie with Bucknell with a victory on Saturday. The Bison will clinch a postseason spot with a win or a tie, and they would gain a playoff berth even with a loss if Colgate also loses at Navy.
