EASTON, Pa. -- Corey Dempsey's goal with 17:22 remaining in the game lifted Lafayette to a 2-1 Patriot League men's soccer victory over Bucknell on Sunday night at Oaks Field. Conor O'Brien (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./St. Anthony's) scored his fifth goal of the season for the Bison, who fell to 6-7-3 overall and 2-3-0 in the league.
The victory allowed Lafayette (7-5-3, 2-1-2) to pass Bucknell and move into a tie for fourth place in the Patriot League standings. Still, the Bison are just two points out of the fourth and final playoff spot with two league games remaining on the schedule.
In a game that was postponed one day due to heavy rain, Bucknell and Lafayette played an evenly contested match. The Leopards held a 15-11 shots advantage, and the Bison had a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
Lafayette went up 1-0 in the 11th minute when Steve Ference's free kick rolled into the right side of the goal.
The Bison had two very good chances to score later in the first half. With about 20 minutes left in the half Lafayette goalkeeper Philip Nelson robbed Alex Russo (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) with a great save, one of five on the night. Ten minutes later a Leopards defender cleared a ball off the line on a shot from Sean King (Medford, N.J./Shawnee).
The Bison finally broke through in the 58th minute when Chris Hennings (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) dribbled down the right side and played a cross to the far post, wher Luke Joyner (Dallas, Texas/JJ Pearce) headed the ball over to O'Brien for the goal.
But 15 minutes later Dempsey cut back and fired a shot past Will Byrne (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna) for the game-winner.
The Bison wrap up their 2008 home schedule on Tuesday night with a non-conference game against NJIT at 7 p.m. at Holmes Stadium.
