LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's water polo team won in dramatic fashion on the evening of Saturday, Oct. 18, as senior co-captain Alex Lampley (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) scored with 20 seconds remaining on the clock to give the Bison a 9-8 victory over Mercyhurst at Kinney Natatorium. Bison sophomore Richie Hyden (Melbourne, Australia/Greenwich (Conn.)) scored five goals and classmate Howie Kalter (Durham, N.H./Phillips Academy Andover) and Lampley each added two more. The Orange and Blue (12-10) have now won the first three of their games of their five-game homestand, with the final two to be played tomorrow.
Hyden started the scoring for the Bison, knocking home a rebound with 4:17 to play in the first period. Mercyhurst's Alex Moggridge responded, scoring the first of his two penalty-shot goals of the day, 76 seconds later. Bucknell scored the final goal of the period on a Hyden breakaway as goalie Nick Donahue (Brooklyn, N.Y./Lawrenceville) spotted him leaking down the pool.
The team's tied in each period for the remainder of the game, but Bucknell was able to take a 6-3 lead not quite halfway through the third period. The Lakers responded with three straight goals, the final one coming with 6:51 to play in the final period.
Bucknell failed to take advantage of a three-on-two fastbreak with just under six minutes to play, but Johnny Stupp (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute) picked off a pass by Lakers' goalkeeper Andy Sekulski and raced it back to the goal, finding Hyden in front of the net, and Hyden scored to give Bucknell a 7-6 lead with 5:20 to play. The Lakers' Andrew Schonhoff scored just 14 seconds later however and the game was tied again.
Kalter scored his second goal of the game off of a nice pass from Bison senior co-captain Gabriel Heiber (Caracas, Venezuela/Miami Beach (Fla.)), and the Orange and Blue reestablished the lead with 2:30 remaining. Mercyhurst's Trevor McIlwaine tied the game for the fifth and final time on a goal with 33 seconds left. After a Bison timeout, Lampley found the back of the net on a pass from Stupp for the game-winning goal with 20 seconds left. Stupp recorded his fourth steal of the game on Mercyhurt's final possession to secure the victory
Bucknell's next games are Sunday, Oct. 19, at Kinney Natatorium. These will be the final two home games of the year for the Bison, who will play Johns Hopkins at 11 a.m. and No. 17 Navy at 4:30 p.m. Prior to the start of the Navy game, seniors Heiber, Lampley and Alex Lovell will be honored.
