LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell scored the first four goals and held Johns Hopkins to one score in the game's first 21 minutes as the Bison defeated the Blue Jays 10-3 in men's water polo action Sunday at Kinney Natatorium. The win was the fifth in a row for Bucknell, which improved to 13-10 overall and 4-2 in CWPA Southern Division play.
Bison goalie Nick Donahue (Brooklyn, N.Y./Lawrenceville) continued his strong play this weekend with 11 more saves. He now has 36 stops in four games this weekend and a team-high 125 this year.
Bucknell's offensive attack, which was without leading scorer Richie Hyden (Melbourne, Australia/Greenwich (Conn.)) for much of the second half due to foul trouble, was very balanced as five different players netted two goals. Randy Ang (Hillsborough, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep), Beau Caillouette (Newport Beach, Calif./Sage Hill School), Gabriel Heiber (Caracas, Venezuela/Miami Beach (Fla.)), Hyden and Howie Kalter (Durham, N.C./Phillips Academy Andover) were the five Bison to register two goals. Heiber and Kalter each added one assist to tie Johnny Stupp for the team lead in points with three. Stupp dished out three assists, his sixth game this season with that many.
After scoring its first five goals at even strength, Bucknell capitalized on man-up situations in the second half. It converted three six-on-five chances in the final two quarters and Caillouette also added a five-meter penalty shot.
John Barrett led the way for Johns Hopkins (10-12, 1-5 CWPA) with two goals, while Jamie Neuwirth added one in the final seconds of the first half as the Blue Jays avoided being shut out in the first 16 minutes of play.
Bucknell, which is playing at home for the only time this season, will wrap up its busy five-game weekend slate Sunday afternoon against No. 17 Navy at 4:30 p.m. Live video of the contest will be available through Bison Vision. Additionally, the three Bison seniors will be honored in pregame Senior Day festivities.
