HAMDEN, Conn. -
The Bucknell men's tennis team wrapped up its weekend in Hamden, Conn., on Sunday, Oct. 12, as play concluded at the Quinnipiac Invitational. Bison freshman Gregory Maxson (Mt. Pleasant, S.C./Hotchkiss) won both of his matches, and, in doing so, won the "D" Singles bracket. Bucknell finished with a 12-9 overall singles record in the tournament.
Maxson defeated Regins Chang of Boston University in the semifinal match, 7-6, 6-0, before taking on Matt Burns of Connecticut in the final. Burns was the bracket's top-seed, but Maxson was up to the task, achieving victory in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
The Bison were not as successful in the other three brackets on Sunday, losing in the semifinals of each one. Bucknell's Ryan Sandburg (Orange, Calif./Canyon) lost his "A" Singles match to the Bobcats' John Hughes, 7-5, 6-1. Hughes would go on to win the bracket with a 6-7, 7-6, 10-3, win against Kirill Kasyanov of Sacred Heart.
In "B" Singles, the Orange and Blue's Mark Malloy (Bronxville, N.Y./Hackley) lost a tough match to Fairfield's Dan Sauter, 6-2, 2-6, 11-9. Sauter would split the bracket's championship with teammate Joe Michalisin, as each player won one set in a match that was suspended.
Finally, Bucknell senior Daniel Bednarek (Haworth, N.J./Bergen Catholic) lost to Quinnipiac's Charlie Feldman, 6-7, 6-2, 10-6, in "C" Singles play. Feldman lost to Connecticut's Scott Warden in the finals, 5-7, 6-4, 10-3.
The Bison will next compete at the ITA Regionals, starting Thursday, Oct. 16, in Princeton, N.J. The Bucknell women's tennis team will also take part in the ITA Regionals on those same dates, with its competition being held in Norfolk, Va.
