LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior co-captain Mark Schmiegel (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) earned his second Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week citation in the last three weeks on Monday after booting another game-winning goal in overtime, this one coming Saturday night in a 1-0 verdict over Army.
After the Bison and Black Knights played 90 minutes of scoreless soccer, Schmiegel found himself on the proper end of a nice crossing feed from teammate Chris Hennings, and he finished with his left foot from about 10 yards out.
It was Schmiegel's career-high fifth goal of the season and his second in sudden-death overtime. Exactly two weeks earlier, he scored in overtime to turn back Navy 2-1.
Including his sudden-death score in the 2006 NCAA Tournament against George Mason, Schmiegel now has three career overtime goals, which ties the Bucknell record. Dave Domsohn, a Bucknell Hall of Famer who holds the school records for goals (52), assists (34) and points (138), also had three overtime tallies from 1985-88.
Now 5-5-3 overall and 2-1 in the Patriot League, the Bison are off until Saturday when they take on conference rival Colgate at home at 4 p.m.
