LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's soccer team made just one defensive error in 104 minutes of action, but it was enough to cost the Bison in a 1-0 double-overtime loss to Army on Sunday afternoon at Holmes Stadium. Dymon Washington scored the game-winner with 5:53 left in extra time to keep the Black Knights perfect in Patriot League play at 3-0, while Bucknell fell to 1-2, with both setbacks coming in sudden-death.
Bucknell's defense, which posted its sixth shutout of the year on Friday night against Holy Cross, was rock-solid all day, particularly in the second half when the Bison outshot Army 7-1. In the final 30 minutes of regulation Bucknell generated a handful of decent scoring chances against an Army team that posted its fifth straight victory and fourth straight shutout.
Patriot League scoring leader Jennifer Dervarics (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) just missed on a header to the near post with 33 minutes left after a nice cross from Lauren Stoller (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge).
Perhaps Bucknell's best offensive sequence of the day came in the 72nd minute, when Dervarics weaved through traffic with some nice ball control then slipped a pass wide to the right side for Kelly Boswell (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West). Boswell lofted a cross to the far post, where Christa Matlack (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport Area) just missed putting home a header.
Four minutes later Molly Linhart (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) was barely high on a volley from 14 yards out on a scramble after a corner kick.
In the first overtime period, Bucknell goalkeeper Kathryn Sutton (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area) made a daring challenge, coming off her line with a slide to take the ball off the foot of Deanna Clegg. In the 96th minute, a Bucknell foul led to a tricky restart just to the right of the penalty box, but Sutton tipped Julia Stallard's shot off the crossbar.
With 6:30 left in the second overtime stanza, Kelliann Doherty (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) tried a low shot through traffic, but Army keeper Alex Lostetter (seven saves) was there to gobble it up.
About 90 seconds later, Army's Sarah Goss played a pass that got through Bucknell's back line, and Washington, a freshman who is the Black Knights' scoring leader, broke in alone from the 18 and slid home the game-winner.
Bucknell outshot Army 18-12 and allowed no especially dangerous scoring opportunities until the overtime periods.
Army, now 10-4-0 overall, remains tied atop the Patriot League standings with Navy, which also improved to 3-0 in league play on Sunday with a 2-0 win over Lehigh. Bucknell (7-5-2) dropped into a tie for fifth place. The Bison have now played both of the first-place teams in the league, dropping both games in overtime.
Bucknell will be back in action next Saturday, Oct. 18, taking on Colgate at 7 p.m.
