LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's and women's tennis teams are hosting the three-day Bucknell Invitational this weekend, starting Friday, Oct. 3. Men's teams from Connecticut, Quinnipiac and Wilkes University will be competing, while Colgate, Connecticut and Quinnipiac will be participating in women's tennis.
The Bison men's team last competed in the Northeast Tournament held at Brown University in Providence, R.I., from Sept. 19-21. Sophomore Mark Malloy (Bronxville, N.Y./Hackley School) emerged as the winner of the No. 2 Flight Singles bracket, and paired with junior Zach Hascoe (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick) to win the No. 2 Flight Doubles bracket. Malloy has compiled a 7-0 record in singles matches during the 2008 fall season, while also winning all six of his doubles matches with Hascoe this season.
Senior co-captain Ryan Sandburg (Orange, Calif./Canyon) has moved into sole possession of firs place for all-time doubles victories in Bison men's tennis history, with 75 wins. He currently ranks second all-time in combined victories with 128 and is in the top-five of singles wins with 53. He has a combined 11-2 record so far this season.
This weekend marks the second consecutive home tournament for the Bucknell women's tennis team, who hosted a previous three-day Bucknell Invitational from Sept. 19-21. Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) was the Bison's top performer that weekend, winning the Flight "A" Singles bracket and pairing with senior captain Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School) to win the Flight "A" Doubles bracket. Lucido is 6-0 in singles matches this fall and 5-0 in doubles matches. Freshman Dumi Iepuras (Moldova/Germantown Friends School) won the Flight "B" Singles bracket at the Bucknell Invitational, while classmate Liz Larkin (Blue Bell, Pa./Germantown Academy) finished fifth.
Gamboa has 105 career wins between singles and doubles play, just two victories shy of moving into fifth place on the Bison's all-time wins list. Her 54 doubles wins rank fourth, while her 51 singles wins place her seventh. She has a combined 9-2 record this fall season.
The men's tennis team will play in the Quinnipiac Invitational, Oct. 10-12, before both Bison tennis squads will complete their fall seasons, Oct. 16-18, with their respective ITA Regionals.
