Bucknell Swimming and Diving Competes in Dual Meet Finale this Saturday at Lehigh

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell swimming and diving squads will compete in their final dual meet of 2007-08 this Saturday at Lehigh beginning at 1 p.m. On the men's side, the Bison enter the weekend at 5-2 overall (4-1 PL) and are guaranteed to finish with their best duals record since the 2000-01 season. The Bison women will be looking secure a .500 record as the squad is currently 3-4 overall (3-2 PL).
BISON SWIMMING AND DIVING NOTEBOOK
Against Mountain Hawks
- Bucknell is 21-8 all time against Lehigh (0-10, 0-4 PL) on the women's side since the series began in 1976-77, including a 209-91 victory last season in Lewisburg.
- In a series that began in 1960, the Bison men lead Lehigh, 29-17. However, the Mountain Hawks have won the last two meetings overall and have not lost to the Orange and Blue in Bethlehem, Pa., since 1992.
Top Performances for the Bison Women Last Weekend vs. Columbia and Army
- Sophomore Abigail Atkinson (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) won the 200 back against Army and was the runner-up in four events across the two meets, the 200 back and 200 breast versus Columbia and the 100 back and 200 IM at Army.
- Freshman Molly Goebel (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) scored in five events last weekend, with her best showings coming in the 50 free (second) and the 100 free (second) at Army. She was also fourth in the 100 fly against the Black Knights and was third in the 100 free and fifth in the 200 free against Columbia.
- Junior Susan Horstmann (Havertown, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) posted five top-five finishes, including a third-place showing in the 500 free against Columbia and also took third in the 200 free in the win over Army.
- Freshman Macey Keath (Lebanon, Conn./New Canaan) was the runner-up in both the 100 and 200 breast at Army.
- Sophomore Megan Mongan (Malvern, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) won two events (the 100 free and 200 IM) against the Black Knights, while taking second in the 200 free. Versus the Lions, she was third in the 50 free.
- Junior Kelly Morris (Metuchen, N.J./Metuchen) won three events last week, taking first in the 200 breast in both meets and the 100 breast against Army.
- Sophomore Abigail Paules (York, Pa./Baltimore Lutheran) was fourth in the 200 fly in both meets, while placing third in the 200 back in the win over the Black Knights.
- Sophomore Sarah Pease (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin Senior High) won the 500 free against the Lions and scored in both the 200 fly (second) and the 100 fly (third) at Army.
- Senior Kristen Skroski (North Haven, Conn./Hopkins) collected three runner-up finishes, one in the 200 free against Colgate and two at Army in the 500 free and the 1,000 free.
- Sophomore Courtney Warren (Montour Falls, N.Y./Watkins Glen) won the 100 back against the Black Knights.
- Sophomore Rebecca Bersani (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) was second in one-meter diving against Columbia and third at Army.
- Sophomore Allison FitzPatrick (Berwyn, Pa./Episcopal Academy) was the runner-up on the three-meter board in both meets.
- Sophomore Eliza Massie (Rochester, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland) registered third-place finishes in both diving events against Columbia and was second in the one-meter and third in the three-meter at Army.
Top Performances for the Bison Men Last Weekend vs. Columbia and Army
- Junior Christopher Amato (East Norwich, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) was the runner-up in the 100 fly (53.41) and the 100 back (54.50) at Army. Both times were season-best marks.
- Freshman Gonzalo DeLeon (Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland Regional) won the 200 back and finished third in the 100 back against Columbia, while taking second in the 200 back and third in the 100 back against the Black Knights.
- Sophomore Daniel Fletcher (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) won the 200 back in both meets and posted a personal best in the event against Columbia (1:54.34). He also swam a personal best time in the 50 free against the Lions to take fourth (22.02) and was third in the 200 free at Army.
- Sophomore David Iselin (Potomac, Md./ Churchill) was the runner-up in the 500 free versus Columbia and scored in both the 200 back and the 1,000 free at Army, posting a season-best time in the 200 back (1:55.83) and a personal best in the 1,000 free (9:56.07).
- Junior Mark Kawczenski (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Hanover Area) won the 100 back at Army and scored in the 100 free (fourth).
- Sophomore Ben Leboza (Green Oaks, Ill./Libertyville) was the runner-up in the 1,000 free against Columbia, swimming a career-best time of 10:05.46. He also scored in the 100 free against the Lions and in both the 500 free (third) and the 200 free (fourth) versus the Black Knights.
- Senior Joseph Metcalf (Knoxville, Tenn./Philips Exeter Academy (N.H.)) won the 200 breast at Army, posting a season-best mark of 2:08.93, while also finishing third in the 100 breast.
- Senior John Peterman (Conestoga, Pa./Penn Manor) won both the 50 free and the 100 free against the Black Knights and was the runner-up in both events versus Columbia. His 100 free time against the Lions was his fastest of the season (46.87).
- Senior Grant Steadman (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) took third in the 50 free in both meets and was third in the 100 free at Army.
- Sophomore Luke Trafton (Bath, Maine/Morse) won three events last weekend, the 200 free against Columbia and the 200 fly and 1,000 free at Army, swimming a season-best 9:43.19 in the 1,000 free. He was the runner-up in the 500 free against the Black Knights as well and took third in the 200 fly versus the Lions.
- Freshman Michael Volpe (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) placed third in the 100 fly at Army and finished fourth in the 200 fly in both meets last weekend.
- Junior Jeffrey Manning (Bringhurst, Ind./Carroll Jr./Sr. High) won both the one-meter and three-meter diving events against Columbia, posting a career-best score of 279.97 on the three-meter board. Against Army, he was the runner-up in both events.
On the Bison Women in 2007-08
- After opening the season with a non-scored dual against UMBC on Oct. 6, in Kinney Natatorium, Bucknell held its annual Blue vs. Orange meet on Oct. 27. The Blue squad captured a narrow 126-123 victory. Then against Duquesne on Nov. 3, the Bison fell to the Dukes, 138-124. On Nov. 10, Bucknell picked up wins against American and Lafayette, but fell to Navy. The Bison defeated the Eagles, 223-71, and the Leopards, 170-130, while dropping a 163-137 decision to the Mids. At the Bucknell Trials/Finals Invitational, the Bison took third out of the five squads who competed in the weekend's action. With 722 points, the Orange and Blue finished ahead of Binghamton (289 points) and TCNJ (109), while coming in behind Towson (1294) and James Madison (841). At the three-day Big Al Open, the Bison scored 55 team points and placed 11th. To begin 2008, Bucknell dropped its Patriot League dual at Colgate by a 174-124 margin on Jan. 12. Last weekend, the Bison fell to Columbia, 163.5-79.5, on Friday, but rebounded with a victory over Army on Saturday, 167-133.
On the Bison Men in 2007-08
- The Bison began the 2007-08 campaign with a non-scored dual against UMBC on Oct. 6, and held an intrasquad Blue vs. Orange meet on Oct. 27. On Nov. 3, Bucknell picked up a 151-100 victory at Duquesne. On Nov. 10, in Annapolis, Md., the Orange and Blue came away from a quad meet with two wins and one loss, defeating American, 236-57, and Lafayette, 202-92, but falling to host Navy, 159-125. On Nov. 18, the Bison placed second out of the four squads who competed in the Bucknell Trials/Finals Invitational. With 857.5 points, Bucknell finished ahead of Binghamton (763 points) and TCNJ (543.5 points), but behind Towson (1,294). At the Big Al Open, the Bison finished seventh with 86 points. Most recently on Jan. 12, Bucknell started off the New Year with a 192-96 victory over Colgate in Hamilton, N.Y. Most recently, the Bison fell to Columbia, 141-100, on Jan. 18 and then defeated Army on Jan. 19 for the first time in a dual meet since 1975, winning by the score of 155-145.
