Bucknell Men's Track and Field Opens 2008 With Gulden Relays

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's track and field team hosted the Gulden Relays on Saturday, Jan. 12, picking up two individual wins and two relay wins, in addition to the posting of IC4A-qualifying marks by sophomore Kyle Anthony (Barryville, N.Y./Eldred Central) in the triple jump, sophomore Timothy Medlock (Evan Mills, N.Y./Indian River) in the shot put and the Bison distance medley relay team.
Anthony, the Field Most Valuable Athlete in the meet, won the triple jump with a distance of 48-0, an IC4A-qualifying standard. Anthony had already qualified for IC4A's with his mark of 48-3/4 posted at the Bison Opener on Dec. 1. Medlock took second in the shot put with an IC4A-qualifying distance of 51-4 ½. The mark placed him second on Bucknell's all-time top-10 list for the event.
The Bison distance medley relay team of sophomore Kyle Ramer (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield), freshman John Picardo (Rochester, N.Y./Hilton Central), senior Brian Mooney (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) and senior Wallace Campbell (Montgomery, Ala./Montgomery Acad.) placed first with an IC4A-qualifying time of 10:14.89.
Bucknell took the top-three places in the weight throw. Senior James Meyer (Pac. Palisades, Calif./Pacific Palisades) finished first with a distance of 51-7 ¼ while Medlock and sophomore Jonathan Lockhart finished in second (45-10 ¾) and third (45-3 ½), respectively.
The Bucknell 4x800 relay team comprised of sophomore Andrew Huebner (Hampton Falls, N.H./Governor Dummer Academy), freshman Evan Novakowski (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury), sophomore Conor McNamara (Baldwin, N.Y./Chaminade) and freshman John Picardo (Rochester, N.Y./Hilton Central) won the event in 8:01.92.
The Bucknell 4x400 relay team of sophomore Clement Gyan (Yonlers, N.Y./Abraham Lincoln), Anthony, freshman Guy Castranova (Trenton, N.J./Notre Dame) and junior Kerry Boyle (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton) took second with a time of 3:20.21 to tie the tenth-fastest time in Bucknell history.
In the 60-meter hurdles, sophomore Andrew Yehl (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) ran a time of 8.46 (the third-fastest finish all-time for Bucknell) to finish third. Sophomore Ryan White (Elkins Park, Pa./Father Judge) followed in fifth with a time of 8.69 to place himself eighth on Bucknell's all-time top-10 list for the event. Additionally, sophomore Sean Coyne (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) tied for ninth on Bucknell's all-time top-10 list for the event, clocking a time of 8.78 for eighth place.
Top finishers for Bucknell in running events also included senior Matt Johnson (Newburgh, NY/Marlboro Central) in the 60-meter dash, placing 11th with a time of 7.17 in the final. Sophomore Clement Gyan (Yonlers, N.Y./Abraham Lincoln) led the Bison in the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:07.76 for fifth place. In the mile run, sophomore Baron Willeford (New Orleans, La./Columbia Prep (N.Y.)) had the top finish for Bucknell in 4:27.88 for third place. Freshman Ian Shore (South Orange, N.J./Seton Hall Preparatory School) paced the Orange and Blue in the 3,000-meter run, taking ninth in 9:16.85. The Bison were led by freshman Joshua Clark (Vincentown, N.J./Seneca) in the 5,000-meter run. Clark clocked in at 16:18.60 for second and was followed by freshman Justin O'Brien (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain) in third (16:24.50).
In field events, freshman Drew Fitzgerald (Ballston Spa, Pa./Ballston Spa) was the top finisher for the Bison in the long jump, placing fifth with a distance of 21-6 ¼. Fitzgerald went on to post the top mark for Bucknell in the pole vault, taking fourth with a height of 14-3 ¼. He was followed White in fifth (13-9 ¼). Junior Ryan Robinson (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) led Bucknell in the high jump, taking second with a height of 6-4 ¾.
In the 1,600-meter sprint medley relay, the Bucknell team of sophomore Thomas Vogler (Oneonta, N.Y./Oneonta), freshman Kevin McGuire (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg), White and Robinson placed second in 3:38.93.
The Bison are now set to prepare for the Bucknell Heptagonal at home on January 19.
