NEWARK, Del. - The Bucknell field hockey team fell to No. 17 Delaware, 4-2, on Saturday and is now 3-2 on the year. Seniors Lindsey Weller (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) and Kelly Hoffman (Boyertown, Pa./Oley Valley) each notched a goal in the second half to bring the Orange and Blue back from a 3-0 deficit.
Delaware, now 6-0 in 2007, put the first goal on the board at just 4:28 into play when Kimmy Schlezes scored, unassisted. The Blue Hens' Casey Howard tallied one more for Delaware in the first half, 8:19 into the contest, to bring the score 2-0 at the half.
Bucknell held the Blue Hens off until 42:59 when Tori Karsten connected on a feed from Missie Woodie to increase the advantage to three.
Trailing 3-0, the Bison rallied for two consecutive goals in the second half. At the 54:24 mark, Weller netted the ball for her first of the season, off an assist from junior Sarah Herrmann (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North). Hoffman added the second goal for Bucknell at 55:47 for her third of the season after receiving a pass from sophomore Megan Krebs (Wilkes Barre, Pa./GAR Memorial).
With less than eight minutes left in the game, Delaware's Casey Howard notched the final tally, converting a pass from Amanda Warrington.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jessie Atieh (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) made eight saves for the Bison, one save shy of her career best nine saves, recorded in last Tuesday's game against Towson.
"Delaware was outstanding," said Bucknell head coach Heather Lewis, "There were moments where we played right with them and there were moments where we fell behind. Delaware took advantage of those moments, and that is what good teams do. I am proud of our girls. We will take the positives from this game and keep moving forward."
Bucknell will return to Graham Field Tuesday, Sept. 11 to take on Lock Haven at 7 p.m.
