Bucknell Women's Soccer to Make 2007 Home Debut This Weekend Against UMBC

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's soccer team will kick of its 2007 home schedule this weekend as the Bison will play host to UMBC on Sunday, Sept. 6, at 2 p.m. on Varsity Soccer Field. Bucknell is 1-2-0 on the season, while the Retrievers, still in search of their first victory of the year, sit at 0-3-0.

About the Series
- The Bison are 1-2-0 against UMBC since the teams first met on Sept. 11, 1991, in Baltimore, Md. Bucknell's win in the series came at home on Sept. 9, 1992, by a 3-2 margin. Then in their most recent contest against the Orange and Blue, on Sept. 7, 1993 in Baltimore, the Retrievers came away with a 4-3 victory.
Scouting the UMBC Retrievers
- The Retrievers have opened up with three losses, 5-1 to Towson, and two straight 2-1 overtime setbacks to Elon and Drexel. Jessica Young is currently the leading scorer for UMBC with three points on one goal and one assist. Sandra Vacarino and Ashley Signer both have one goal apiece, while Arielle Tagger has one assist. Goalkeepers Catie Bukowski and Christine Bacinski have both seen time in net this season. Butkowski received the starting nod in the past two contests for the Retrievers and currently has a goals against average of 1.86 and has made nine saves (.692 save percentage) over 193:51 minutes.
Last Time Out at No. 12 Rutgers
- Freshman Christa Matlack scored in the 57th minute to give the Bucknell women's soccer team a 1-0 advantage, but it wasn't enough as the Bison fell to No. 12 Rutgers, 2-1 on Wednesday evening. After a scoreless first half that featured 13 shots for Rutgers and two for the Bison, Matlack put Bucknell on the board at 56:38 as she chipped the ball over goalkeeper Erin Guthrie off a feed from sophomore Molly Linhart. The goal, which was the first of Matlack's collegiate career, was also the first allowed by the Scarlet Knights this season. Rutgers countered with two tallies, in the 68th minute and in the 79th minute. Sophomore goalkeeper Kathryn Sutton made a career-high 10 saves for the Orange and Blue in the contest as the Bison were outshot 27-3.
Youth Movement
- Over the first three contests of the season, Bucknell's starting lineup has consisted of one senior, two juniors, four sophomores and four freshmen. In addition to freshmen Kelliann Doherty, Amanda Citron, Caitlin Holtz and Matlack all making their first career starts on Aug. 31 vs. Yale, it marked the first career starts for sophomores Chelsea Brinkman, Linhart and Sutton.
About the Bison
- The Bison have played their first three contests on the road and have picked up one win, 1-0 at Sacred Heart.
- Bucknell has had three different goal scorers in each of its three games: Doherty scored her first of her career at Yale, junior Jennifer Dervarics netted her 13th career tally at Sacred Heart and Matlack scored against Rutgers.
- Sutton has played all 270 minutes in net for the Bison had holds a 1.67 goals against average and a .792 save percentage. She has made a total of 19 saves and recorded her first career shutout against Sacred Heart on Sept. 2.
Home Sweet Home
- Over its first two seasons playing on Varsity Soccer Field, the Bucknell women's soccer team has compiled a 13-3 record at its home facility, including a 6-0-0 mark at home during the regular season in 2006.
Nearing a Program Milestone
- On Wednesday, Sept., 12, when the Bison will play host to St. Francis (Pa.), the match will be the 300th in Bucknell women's soccer history. The program currently holds an all-time record of 138-144-16 (.490).
In the Polls
- The Bison were selected second in the Patriot League preseason poll, the team's highest ranking since 2002 (2nd with 78 points, three first-place votes, also 2nd in 1996). The Bison totaled 85 points, which is their most ever in the preseason poll.
Weekly Awards and Honors
- Dervarics was named Patriot League Honorable Mention on Sept. 4, after scoring the game-winner at Sacred Heart.

- Bucknell will settle in at home as the squad will play four of its next six games on Varsity Soccer Field, beginning with St. Francis (Pa.) on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m.
