Bucknell Tennis Opens 2007 Fall Season At Bloomsburg

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's and women's tennis team is set to begin the 2007 fall season this weekend at the Bloomsburg Invitational. The tournament will run all day Saturday, Sept. 8 through Sunday, Sept. 9. Last season, at Bloomsburg, Bucknell won 19 matches on the men's side and 12 on the women's side for the weekend.
Senior Captains Ira Reibeisen (Armonk, N.Y./Rye Country Day Upper School) and Ben Young (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) lead the Bison on the men's side.
Reibeisen is a two-time First Team All-Patriot League honoree and ranks second for Bucknell all-time in career victories (103). Last season, he went 12-9 while playing in the No. 1 spot of the lineup, 3-2 in Patriot League singles play, and 10-6 in tournament play.
When paired, captains Reibeisen and Young posted an 18-12 record last spring. Young also posted a singles record of 7-11 while playing the No.3 to No. 6 spots in the lineup and went 7-4 in tournament play.
In addition to the senior captains for the men, four juniors, two sophomores, and two freshmen comprise the 2007-08 squad.
The women are led by senior captain Caitlin Baffa (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills High School East), who posted a 3-5 dual singles record while playing in the No. 4 thru the No. 6 spots last season. Also last spring, she played 20 dual doubles matches and recorded six victories while playing in the No. 3 spot.
On the women's side, Bucknell returns three juniors and seven sophomores, including last season's First Team All-Patriot League honorees, junior Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School) and sophomore Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy). Varela was also named Patriot League Rookie of the Year in her first season. In addition, the Bison have three freshmen on the 2007-08 squad.
Looking ahead to the fall season, following the Bloomsburg Invitational, Bucknell will travel to Providence, R.I. for the Brown Invitational, Sept. 14 - Sept. 16 for the men, and to West Point, N.Y. for Eastern Championships on the women's side. Next up, the Bison will play at the Connecticut Invitational, Sept. 28 - Sept. 30 for the men while the women host the Bucknell Invitational. Both the men's and women's squads will play at the Bucknell Invitational Oct. 5 - Oct. 7. ITA Regionals are set for Oct. 10 - Oct. 18 in Princeton, N.J. for the men, and Oct. 19 - Oct. 21 in Norfolk, Va. for the women.
