PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Freshman Christa Matlack (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport Area) scored in the 57th minute to give the Bucknell women's soccer team a 1-0 advantage, but it wasn't enough as the Bison fell to No. 12 Rutgers, 2-1 on Wednesday evening. Bucknell is now 1-2-0 on the season, while the Scarlet Knights remain undefeated at 3-0-0.
After a scoreless first half that featured 13 shots for Rutgers and two for the Bison, Matlack put Bucknell on the board at 56:38 as she chipped the ball over goalkeeper Erin Guthrie off a feed from sophomore Molly Linhart (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel Area). The goal, which was the first of Matlack's collegiate career, was also the first allowed by the Scarlet Knights this season.
Rutgers capitalized on a miscue by the Bison defense in the 68th minute, tying the score at 1-1 as Rheanne Sleiman was credited with the tally.
Then, 78:12 into the contest, Gina Demaio netted the deciding goal for the Scarlet Knights as she landed a free kick in the bottom left corner.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kathryn Sutton (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area) made 10 saves for the Orange and Blue in the contest as the Bison were outshot 27-3. Rutgers held the advantage in corner kicks as well, 8-2, while fouls were 11-8 against Bucknell.
The Bison will be back in action this Sunday, Sept. 9, when the squad will play host to UMBC, in its 2007 home opener, beginning at 2 p.m. on Varsity Soccer Field.
