Bucknell Field Hockey Suffers 3-2 Loss In Overtime At Lehigh

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Bucknell field hockey team (6-4, 0-1 PL) opened Patriot League play with a 3-2 loss in overtime at Lehigh (5-5, 1-0 PL) Saturday night, after leading the game 2-0 in the first 63 minutes of play.
Junior Trina Boyer (Macungie, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) got the Bison off to an early lead, notching her sixth goal of the season off an assist by sophomore Megan Krebs (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./GAR Memorial) 3:29 into the first half. Freshman Morgan Kauffman (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor HS) went unassisted for her second goal of the season, to give Bucknell a 2-0 advantage over the Mountain Hawks at the 11:35 mark.
The Bison held Lehigh off until the 63rd minute when the Mountain Hawks rallied for two goals. Lindsay Smith netted her fourth of the season from an assist by Kelly Fox at 63:45, and Kalynn Davies scored off an assist by Kara Zweizig and Marny Hearn for her seventh of the season, to bring the score to 2-2, forcing overtime.
Then, Just 4:48 into the extra period, Lehigh's Christy Smith went unassisted to give the Mountain Hawks the win, 3-2.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jessie Atieh (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) played 74:48 for the Bison and made four saves off Lehigh's seven shots on goal. The Mountain Hawks' goalkeeper Jessica Miller made one save in the contest.
"We played hard," said Bucknell head coach Heather Lewis, "This is a learning experience. We made some tough decisions at wrong times and it caught us. We will learn from this and move forward."
The Bucknell field hockey team is now set to head home for two consecutive games next weekend. The Bison will host American on Oct. 6 and Penn on Oct. 7.
