Bucknell Women's Soccer to Play Pair of Matches Against MAAC Foes This Weekend

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's soccer team will face a pair of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponents this weekend as the Bison will play host to Marist on Friday, Sept. 28, in a 7 p.m. contest, before traveling to Baltimore, Md., for a match at Loyola on Sunday, Sept. 30, at 1 p.m. Coming off a 1-0 victory over Cornell last Sunday, Bucknell is currently 4-4-0 on the year.

Broadcast Coverage
- Friday night's match versus Marist is one of two Bucknell women's soccer contests this season that can be viewed by live internet video broadcast for a subscription fee though BucknellBison.com. Live video coverage will also be provided for the Oct. 26 game versus Lehigh.
About the Series with Marist
- In six all-time meetings with the Red Foxes, the Bison hold a record of 6-0-0 in the series that began on Sept. 9, 2001. Last season in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Bucknell came away with a 2-1 win. Junior Jennifer Dervarics (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) scored the first goal of the contest for the Orange and Blue, while classmate Leah Grimm (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) and senior Krista Lee Gentile (North Haledon, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) both tallied assists in the victory. Gentile dished two assists in Bucknell's 3-2 win in Lewisburg back on Sept. 16, 2005, as well.
About the Series with Loyola
- Bucknell has faced Loyola twice in program history, starting with a road match on Oct. 21, 1992. The Bison are 0-2-0 all-time against the Greyhounds, who claimed a 1-0 victory the last time the teams met on Oct. 20, 1993.
Scouting the Marist Red Foxes
- The Red Foxes are currently 2-3-1 on the year with wins over Army (2-0) and Temple (3-0) to their credit, but have lost their last two matches to Colgate (2-1) and to Seton Hall (4-1).
- Laura Zasly leads Marist with four points on two goals. Merrilynn Esteve and Kate Fox follow with three points apiece (1g, 1a). Three additional members of the Red Foxes have tallied goals on the year, while four others have assists.
- Goalkeepers Allison Lane and Caitlin Nazarechuk have split time in net this season. Lane is 1-2-1 and has played 282:22 over four games, allowing four goals for a 1.27 goals against average and has 14 saves for a .778 save percentage. Nazarechuk is 1-1 and has played 266:17 over five games. She has allowed five goals (1.69 GAA) and has made 15 saves (.750 save pct.).
Scouting the Loyola Greyhounds
- With a match at Central Florida on Friday evening, the Greyhounds enter the weekend with a record of 2-4-1, picking up wins over Wake Forest (2-1) and Richmond (3-0) so far this season.
- Theresa Ferraina has a team-high seven points for Loyola (3g, 1a), followed by Christina Gomez with six (2g, 2a) and Lina Staropoli with five (1g, 3a).
- Brittany Henderson has played 647:29 minutes in net for the Greyhounds and holds a 1.39 goals against average and a .848 save percentage, allowing 10 goals and making 56 saves on the season.
Last Time Out
- Freshman Kelliann Doherty (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) scored in the 100th minute to help lift the Bucknell women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Cornell on Varsity Soccer Field on Sunday, Sept., 23. In the first half, Cornell generated the majority of the scoring chances, but following the intermission, the Bison dominated play, attempting eight shots and placing five on target, while holding the Big Red to two shots, neither of which was on goal. Despite the increased pressure by the Orange and Blue, Cornell netminder Jodi Palmer held Bucknell off the board to force overtime. With 21 seconds remaining in the extra frame, sophomore Chelsea McGorry's (Charlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill Regional) throw-in pass connected with Doherty on the right-hand side of the Big Red's goal. Doherty collected the ball and drove it high past Palmer for her fourth of the season and first career game winner. Sophomore Kathryn Sutton (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area) made eight saves for the Bison and recorded her second shutout of the season. This past Monday, Doherty was recognized for her performance as she earned Patriot League BRINE Rookie of the Week honors for the first time in her career.
About the Bison
- The Bison have played eight matches so far, four on the road, four at home, and have collected wins over Sacred Heart (1-0), UMBC (5-1), Saint Francis (Pa.) (5-2) and Cornell (1-0, OT).
- Bucknell has not allowed a first half goal this season, outscoring opponents, 7-0, before the intermission.
- Freshman Christa Matlack (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport Area) paces the Bucknell offense with five goals and two assists for 12 points. Two of her tallies have been game winners (vs. UMBC and Saint Francis (Pa.)). Against Cornell, she saw her five-game point scoring streak come to an end. Her first collegiate goal came at No. 12 Rutgers in the 57th minute to give Bucknell a 1-0 lead in that contest. As of Monday's Patriot League statistical report, she ranked fourth in points and points per game (1.50), goals and goals per game (0.62). She was tied for second in game-winning goals, as well.
- Dervarics follows Matlack with 10 points on three goals and four assists. She scored the game winner at Sacred Heart and matched her career high with five points against UMBC, while recording three assists against Saint Francis (Pa.). Her three assists versus the Red Flash matched the second-highest single-game total in program history. The only other Bison to ever notch three or more assists in a match was Lisa Gibbons '95 as she totaled three against Scranton in 1994 and set the Bucknell record in the same season with four against Lycoming. Dervarics is second in the Patriot League in assists and assists per game (0.50). She is sixth in points and fifth in points per game (1.25).
- Doherty scored her first of her career at Yale on Aug. 31 and currently has nine points on the year (4g, 1a). She is second on the squad behind Matlack in goals and is tied for sixth in the category among the Patriot League leaders. She is tied for sixth in goals per game (0.50) on the PL list and is tied for seventh in points and points per game (1.12).
- McGorry ranks second on the Bucknell squad in assists with three and is tied for third in the PL in assists and assists per game (0.38).
- Sutton has played all 729:39 in goal for the Bison and holds a 1.85 goals against average and a .727 save percentage. She has made a total of 40 saves, good for second in the Patriot League and recorded her first career shutout against Sacred Heart on Sept. 2. Against then-ranked No. 12 Rutgers, she made a career-high 10 saves. On the year, she has two shutouts, which leads Patriot League goalkeepers.
Home Sweet Home
- Just beginning its third season of competition on Varsity Soccer Field, the Bucknell women's soccer team has compiled a 16-4-0 record at its home facility, including a 6-0-0 mark at home during the regular season in 2006. So far in 2007, the Bison are 3-1-0 in Lewisburg.
Bison Milestones
- On Wednesday, Sept., 12, Bucknell played its 300th in match in program history, celebrating with a 5-2 win over Saint Francis (Pa.). The program currently holds an all-time record of 141-146-16 (.492).
- With 41 career points, Dervarics is currently one shy of Bucknell's top-10 all time in that category. Her second tally against UMBC moved her into 10th in Bison history for career goals. After registering three assists against Saint Francis (Pa.), she is now tied for eighth in career assists with 11.
- Gentile is one goal away from tying Kerry McDonnell for third in program history as her next tally will be the 30th of her career. She is eight shy of passing McDonnell on the career points list. Gentile is also three away from breaking Bucknell's career game winning goals record, held by Lisa Gibbons with 15.
Weekly Awards and Honors
- Dervarics was named Patriot League Honorable Mention on Sept. 4, after scoring the game winner at Sacred Heart.
- Matlack earned her first Patriot League BRINE Rookie of the Week honor on Monday, Sept. 10, after recording a three-goal week with one at Rutgers and two against UMBC, including her first career game winner. She was named Patriot League Honorable Mention on Sept. 17 after posting five points on two goals and an assist in a two-game week, tallying the deciding goal against Saint Francis (Pa.).
- Sutton picked up her first career Patriot League BRINE Goalkeeper of the Week award on Monday, Sept. 10, for her 10-save performance at Rutgers and her win over UMBC.
- On Sept. 24, Doherty was named the Patriot League BRINE Rookie of the Week for the first time in her career after scoring the game-winning goal in overtime against Cornell, leading the Bison to a 1-0 victory.
In the Polls
- The Bison were selected second in the Patriot League preseason poll, the team's highest ranking since 2002 (2nd with 78 points, three first-place votes, also 2nd in 1996). The Bison totaled 85 points, which is their most ever in the preseason poll.
Looking Ahead
- Bucknell will begin Patriot League play next Friday, Oct. 5, as the Bison will play host to defending league champion Navy in a 7 p.m. contest on Varsity Soccer Field.
