JERSEY CITY, N.J. - A goal by Corey Curnutte (Waterford, Mich./Detroit Country Day) in the 81st minute was not enough for the Bucknell men's soccer team as it fell to St. Peter's by a 2-1 score Saturday afternoon at Jaroschak Field. The Bison, who fell to 0-3-2, could not overcome a 2-0 second-half deficit as they lost their third one-goal contest this season.
Murphy Wiredu sandwiched a pair of goals around halftime to stake St. Peter's to take a 2-0 lead early in the second half. His first came in the 41st minute with Juan Gaviria earning the assist. The second came 1:55 into the second half with Lebogang Pila being credited with the assist.
Neither team scored again until Curnutte tallied his first goal of the season, and the second of his career, at the 80:32 mark. Kevin Holmes (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock) took a shot that hit off the left post. Justin Wolf (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) ended up with the ball, passed it to Curnutte, who headed it into the back of the net. It was the team-high second assist of the season for Wolf, who now has 10 in his career to stand three shy of breaking into Bucknell's top-10 list.
Joey Kuterbach (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) made four saves for the Bison, while Matthew Lawlor stopped nine for the Peacocks, who moved to 3-2-0 on the season.
Statistically, the match was fairly even with Bucknell outshooting St. Peter's 15-12, but the Peacocks holding a slight 4-3 edge in corner kicks. The Bison where whistled for 14 fouls compared to 11 for St. Peter's.
Bucknell has just one more contest in its grueling beginning-of-the-season schedule where five of its first six games are away from Lewisburg. The Bison will return to New Jersey on Tueasday, Sept. 18, to take on Rider at 4 p.m.
