NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Freshman Kelliann Doherty (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) scored in her collegiate debut, but it wasn't enough to help the Bucknell women's soccer team past Yale as the Bison fell, 3-1, in their 2007 season opener on Friday afternoon. The Orange and Blue are now 0-1-0, while the Bulldogs move to 1-0-0.
After a scoreless first half, Yale broke the deadlock in the 60th minute as Maggie Westfal fired a shot over Bucknell goalkeeper Kathryn Sutton (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area) from 35 yards out after receiving the ball off a throw-in by Hannah Smith.
Just 69 seconds later, the Bulldogs struck again when Becky Brown sent a left-footed shot into the corner of the net with the assist once again going to Smith.
Yale added its final tally at 73:18 as Leslie Perez dribbled around Sutton and finished off a feed from Natalia Mann.
Doherty spoiled the shutout for the Bulldogs in the 80th minute, scoring on a direct kick from just outside the box. She finished the contest with four shots, two on goal, to pace the Bison.
Bucknell continued to pressure, generating two quality chances in the final 17 minutes and landing two shots on goal. The first opportunity came at 82:36 as freshman Christa Matlack (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport Area) hit the side of the net and, at 87:46, senior Leslie Schulze (Brookeville, Md./Sherwood) sent the ball off the crossbar. Freshman Brooke Stokes (Gladwyne, Pa./The Shipley School) and junior Leah Grimm (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) each placed shots on target, however both were turned aside by Ayana Sumiyasu.
After being outshot 10-4 in the first half, Bucknell matched Yale's nine attempts in the second half, bringing the final total to 19-13 in favor of the Bulldogs. Sutton made three saves in her first collegiate start for the Orange and Blue, while Susan Starr and Sumiyasu split time in goal for Yale and recorded two saves apiece.
The Bison led in corner kicks, 5-4 and committed seven fouls to the Bulldogs' six.
Bucknell will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 2, as the Bison will take on Sacred Heart at 1 p.m. in Fairfield, Conn.
